IMAN Leaders Ratify Platform for National Grassroots Campaign

From June 12th -14th Habibah Collins, a key IMAN Project Restore leader, and Rami Nashashibi, Executive Director of IMAN, participated in ratifying the Equal Voice for America's Families national platform over several days of events.  The program included intense sessions in review of position statements and policy recommendations posed in the platform which was produced by families through over 50  town hall meetings convened to explore solutions and share common struggles around living wages, access to healthcare, public safety, education, criminal justice and immigration.

IMAN has been actively involved from the early stages of the Equal Voices Campaign, which aims to lay the groundwork for a family led movement for social change. The goal is to bring families together in order to create a sustained shift in national attitudes and policies affecting poor and working families.

Please join IMAN and thousands of other families to promote the economic and social well-being for communities across America in Chicago on September 6th at Navy Pier as we endorse the adoption of a national family agenda and participate in the convention which will occur simultaneously also in Los Angelas and Birmingham.

IMAN Health Clinic Making Strides

IMAN's Health Clinic has become a leading entity in the community, providing comprehensive medical services to the largely under insured and uninsured population of the Chicago's Southwest Side.  With over 25 volunteer doctors, physicians, nurses and other medical staff the clinic continues to grow in its effort to meet the tremendous community need. In addition to treating patients every Sunday, its hours were further expanded to include Thursday afternoons. The additional capacity has enabled the clinic with the ability to accommodate over 500 patients.

IMAN is always recruiting doctors, physicians, nurses and other medical practitioners to help to sustain and grow ongoing operations. If interested please contact Health Administrator, Mariam Azam at mariam@imancentral.org or 773.434.4626

Leaders of the New School

Several months ago IMAN's Director of Arts and Culture, Asad Jafri, through the mobilization of a global-wide network of supporters, was successful in securing an award of $35,000 from the Case Foundation for it's "Leaders of the New School" project. Leaders of the New School is an artist apprenticeship, helping to facilitate the development of young artists who wish to craft their skills for the empowerment of themselves and their communities.

In response to the pervasive violence across the city and on Chicago's Southwest Side, IMAN has taken the lead in creating a Community Safe Zone in collaboration with several local organizations, such as Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP),  around an 8 block radius. The following events are apart of a Community Safe Zone strategy to generate connectivity and deep institutional involvement within the designated safe zone area.

Youth Job Fair

On Tuesday, July 8th over 100 youth attended the Youth Job Fair organized by IMAN and SWOP. Funding for jobs was provided by the State of Illinois which allowed organizations such as IMAN, SWOP, and Southwest Youth Collaborative (SYC) to create positions for the development and civic engagement among youth.

Sunday, July 13th IMAN officially launched its collaborative "Community Safe Zone" through a block party that brought out 200 community members from the neighborhood. This event gathered community members through music, food, games and direct neighborhood engagement. IMAN historically has been a leading organization in dealing with violence in the community.

3-0n-3 Basketball Block Tournament

Each week IMAN will be going to some of the most violent prone blocks in the community safe zone to conduct  3-on -3 basketball tournaments with block residents that will cumulate with a championship tournament on August 24th at St. Rita's Parking Lot across the street from the IMAN center.  These Basketball Tournaments represents one of several strategies to identify and facilitate relationship building with some of the most disconnected segments of our community.

BOARD MEMBER VISITS NETHERLANDS ON U.S. MUSLIM DELEGATION

As a growing nonprofit organization with over ten years of  grassroots organizing and social service experience, the IMAN effort continues to provide critical insight  to those seeking to understand American Muslim identity and the important civic role Muslims play in the inner city. Towards this end, individuals and organizations from all over the world have visited the IMAN center in recent months including those from the UK, Jordan, Tajekistan and Italy.

Board member and Transitional House Coordinator, Rafi Peterson, traveled to participate in a two week exchange program in the Netherlands. During this program, Rafi had the opportunity to meet in dialogue with leaders of various Muslim communities, law enforcement officials, local and national elected officials, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding issues of criminal justice in the inner-cities. His experience in community and street level outreach allowed him to engage these representatives with valuable advice and guidance.

Muslims and the Destiny of America
On Faith - Washingtonpost.com | June 16, 2008
By Eboo Patel

Most Muslim events are held in anonymous rooms in suburban hotels, silently sending the message that American Muslims ought not concern themselves with the great issues of our time and place. Much of the talk is about the old days in other places - Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, the Palestinian territories. Most of the talkers are aging men with long beards ("uncles", we call them), first generation immigrants who tell long stories about pure places far away. Their identities were formed in those settings. Their memories of other times on distant shores are sweet.
