United Way MLK Day of Service

As part of United Way's MLK Day of Service volunteers spent a Saturday afternoon painting at Family Support Council, a United Way partner agency. Volunteers completed three beautiful murals to brighten up the playground. A goup of volunteers also painted the boardroom. Volunteers enjoyed a pizza lunch and viewed Deep Down, a PBS documentary about mountaintop removal mining.  Visit our Facebook album to view pictures from the project.

"A volunteer is a person who can see what others cannot see; who can feel what most do not feel. Often, such gifted persons do not think of themselves as volunteers, but as citizens - citizens in the fullest sense: partners in civilization."

-George Bush.

United Way Connects Classrooms to the Community

United Way was recently contacted by Brookwood Elementary to connect the school with a local recipient for their canned food drive. United Way connected Brookwood Elementary with the Salvation Army, a United Way partner agency.

Four kindergarten and two Pre-K classes set a goal to bring in 100 cans of food per class by the 100th day of school. Brookwood students surpassed their goal by collecting 658 cans of food.

The students have been learning about giving, helping others, and sharing. "As a group we decided on a food drive, because we wanted something purposeful and tangible so the students could see they were making a difference," says Jennifer Shupe, a Brookwood kindergarten teacher.

As part of the students' celebration for their 100th day of school, United Way President, Amanda Burt, and Patricia Thompson from Salvation Army were on hand to receive the generous donation. According to Thompson, "In 2010 the Salvation Army's food center served over 2,500 families. Food drives, such as this one, help keep the food center stocked and allow Salvation Army to continue to feed those in need."
