Georgia Power Employees Make MLK Day a DAY ON | |
In Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday, local Georgia Power Employees choose to make it a day on, not a day off. The company's employees participated in a United Way corporate volunteer project at the NWGA Family Crisis Center helping to organize arts and craft supplies and put together a new workout room for battered women. In the words of Dr. King, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities.

How Can You Affect Change?

American Human Development Project and United Way created an online tool that enables you to forecast how things might change in your community if education outcomes were to improve. It goes beyond jobs and incomes into important social issues, like life expectancy, low birthweight babies and obesity rates.

Mary Smith of The Family Support Council, a United Way agency, provided workshops on Child Abuse Prevention during November. She taught a stress reduction session for mothers in The Family Support Council Parents as Teachers program, as well as a presentation to education students at Dalton State on Mandated Reporting Procedures for Child Abuse.

Callers are often facing tough situations and it can be a difficult call to make. Carla Taylor, United Way's Information and Referral Specialist, has been commended for her excellent service. A recent caller expressed just how much Carla's encouragement and affirmation helped her in a time of need. "I could really tell how much she was trying to help and she was very sensitive to my situation."
