The Zakat Foundation gives vital aid to Agadez!
The Zakat Foundation of America has granted over $20,000 for RAIN's emergency summer food program in the Agadez region. Niger is prone to drought, and the prior government did not provide for adequate food storage and emergency planning. As a result, millions are suffering from severe hunger. The food aid provided by large international organizations is generally distributed at city-based feeding centers, leaving the rural millions with no access to food. The people of Agadez are receiving little aid, and hunger is rampant.
With a generous grant from the Zakat Foundation, as well as gifts from our faithful donors, RAIN has, throughout the summer, provided schoolchildren and their families with vital food. We've also given animal feed to nomads dependent on the survival of their animals.
Thank you to Zakat Foundation
and all our generous donors!
Gratitude is best expressed by the people who received RAIN food aid for their children and animals. A Foudouk recipient said: "The words to thank the Zakat Foundation and RAIN escape us; the animal feed is like gold to us." And the Chief of Tazorat, Agadez region: "It (aid from Zakat and RAIN) is aid that came at the right time as we are threatened by a food crisis which drives many parents and their children into exile. Parents have incentive to send their children to school with the aid we just received."
RAIN's food aid to school children will continue this fall, thanks to a grant from the
Prem Rawat Foundation.
thank you!

2010 - 11 Looking forward to the new school year
BACK TO SCHOOL for almost all school-age Americans, but not Nigeriens. A mere 10% of Niger's nomadic children attend school - until RAIN shows up. A RAIN garden increases enrollment by 20%; our mentored children return to school in greater numbers than their classmates.
IN JUNE 2010 A GIRL IN OUR MENTOR PROGRAM GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOL - THE FIRST IN HER ARILT NEIGHBORHOOD EVER TO DO SO!
THANK YOU to the Hurlbut-Johnson Charitable Trust- with your support our mentor programs continue to grow. |

RAIN strengthens health education with Izumi Foundation Grant | | |
A grant from the Izumi Foundation will allow us to offer training to RAIN mentors, helping them to understaind the preventable diseases that are most dangerous to children's health. The mentors will observe children in class and bring those they think might be ill to the local infirmary. They will also educate the children and their parents about these diseases.
In Niger, when illness is recognized and children brought to clinics for care, there are often no medicines available. This Izumi grant will provide mentor training and medicine for treatment of schoolchildren in the Tillaberi and Agadez regions. Through this program, our mentors will gain knowlege and the power to help Niger's children stay healthy.
Stay tuned for news of this exciting program.
thank you, Izumi! |
