ccForensics and Cold Case Investigations

Leading forensic scientist Dr. Henry Lee will present a new seminar, Forensics and Cold Case Investigations. Dr. Lee will be joined this year by Dr. Leah Bush, Chief Medical Examiner, Commonwealth of Virginia. This highly informative class contains new case studies and their forensic implications. Join us for two invigorating days of learning.

Forensics and Cold Case Investigations
January 18-19, 2010 · Fairfax, VA
January 17, 2010: Pre-Seminar Workshop for Attendees

M&S imageThe advances in forensic sciences, technology, and investigative processes applied to old evidence leads many investigators to solve or close cold case. At this seminar, Dr. Lee and Dr. Bush will share their individual and collective knowledge to help participants further appreciate the power of forensics and its importance in conducting cold case investigations.

Solving or closing cold cases provides a sense of relief to the community and closure to the victim's family. Confidence in the judicial system is reinforced.  In addition, an arrest in one case may yield information about another case. Forensic techniques that did not exist when the crime occurred may be applied to old evidence. New evidence may surface as a result of forensics.

Dr. Henry C. Lee, Chief Emeritus for the Scientific Services and former Commissioner of Public Safety for the State of Connecticut, has served as the State's Chief Criminalist since 1979. He is a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Haven and founder of Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science at the University of New Haven. Dr. Lee's work has made him a landmark in modern-day forensic sciences. He has been a prominent player in many of the most challenging cases of the last 40 years.

Dr. Leah Bush, Chief Medical Examiner, Commonwealth of Virginia  is board certified in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and forensic pathology. Dr. Bush received her BS in biology from Virginia Tech, her MS in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University and her MD from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV). She completed a pathology residency at MCV and a forensic pathology fellowship at the Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond, Virginia.

Testing is the most important way of assuring (or controlling) the quality of software. Good practices throughout the development process contribute to the quality of the final product, but only testing can demonstrate that quality has been achieved and identify the problems and the risks that remain.

Some recent glitches owing to the lack of adequate software testing are listed below (excerpt from http://www.softwareqatest.com)
  • A large health insurance company was reportedly banned by regulators from selling certain types of insurance policies in January of 2009 due to ongoing computer system problems that resulted in denial of coverage for needed medications and mistaken overcharging or cancelation of benefits.
  • In August of 2008 it was reported that more than 600 U.S. airline flights were significantly delayed due to a software glitch in the U.S. FAA air traffic control system. The problem was claimed to be a 'packet switch' that 'failed due to a database mismatch', and occurred in the part of the system that handles required flight plans.

The Quality Assurance Testing certificate program is designed to teach the domain knowledge of quality assurance and software testing. Students will be taught in a hands-on manner utilizing automated & performance test tools.
