Wounded Warriors Triumphed at our Annual Summer Sports Camp:

Their Spirit Inspires

The heat of a Sacramento summer didn't hold back Wounded Warriors from participating in our annual summer sports camp June 13th-17th.  Servicemen and women representing the  Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard received instruction in adaptive cycling, wheelchair softball, climbing, scuba, sled hockey, paddle sports and white water rafting, all designed as part of their rehabilitation therapy.  The sports camp is designed for veterans disabled in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Their Spirit Inspires - An Evening of Celebration!

Spirits were high as about 200 people honored Wounded Warriors at our annual "Their Spirit Inspires" dinner Saturday, June 16th at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento.

Petty Officer First Class Ryan Sykes received a standing ovation as he was awarded this year's Warrior Spirit Award for his enthusiasm and determination to adapt and overcome.  He spoke briefly about how this program has made a difference in his life and thanked Disabled Sports USA Far West and supporters in the audience for hosting the sports camp.

Ariel Gilbert, blinded through a tragic tampering of over-the- counter eye drops, received the annual "Their Spirit Inspires" award.  This award is given to a person with a disability who exemplifies the spirit and mission of Disabled Sports USA Far West.  She shared with the audience how a friend encouraged her to join her in a double scull. She had always loved to row but had not attempted it since losing her sight.  Since then she has gone on to complete several races and is involved in the Paralympian movement.

Guests kicked up their heels to the Rupert Duncan Band and took part in a silent auction and Summer Getaway Raffle.  Winners of the raffle were:
  • David DeLellis: 3 days/nights in a Donner Summit House
  • Michael Houghton: 2 nights & dinner at the Marines' Memorial Club & Hotel in San Francisco
  • Gene Gatzert: 1 day whitewater rafting for 6 people

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported and participated in this event!
