Cancer Overview
with Bernard Lewinsky, MD, FACR

Dr. Lewinsky

This workshop will provide an overview of what cancer is. Dr. Lewinsky will discuss cancer with a focus on radiation treatment and its effectiveness.

Bernard Lewinsky, MD, FACR is the Medical Director and Radiation Oncologist for West Hills Radiation Therapy Center.  He earned his medical degree from UC Irvine in 1969, followed by an internship at USC. After two years as Chief Radiation Oncologist at Letterman Army Medical Center, Dr. Lewinsky came to LA and joined Western Tumor Medical Group (WTMG). In 2004, Vantage Oncology and WTMG formed a joint venture to upgrade the technology and to modernize and manage the center. He has received the Medal of Commendation for his services in the Army and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology. Dr. Lewinsky's special interests are in breast and prostate cancers.

 The "Write" Way to Find a Job
with Clair Levy, career coach and survivor

Transitioning back into the workforce or into a new career after surviving cancer can be very challenging. Developing the right written communications strategy in your job search is the first step toward obtaining gainful employment.

 

Clair Levy is a Professional Career Coach and both a thyroid and breast cancer survivor. She has been helping clients take charge of their careers in both the outplacement services industry and in her own practice, Ideal Life Now Coaching & Consulting. By introducing the tools and tricks of the trade, she will help you create and refine your resume and introduce other written job search strategies. Please be prepared to take notes and bring in your old resume if you have one. Friends and family are welcome.

 Frankly Speaking About Cancer Treatment and Side Effects
with Ashkan Lashkari, MD

This workshop, designed for cancer patients and caregivers, features ways to help manage the physical and psychological effects of cancer treatment such as fatigue, hair loss, anemia, infection and pain followed by Q and A with the doctor. This program includes an educational workshop and a comprehensive patient education booklet and journal designed to help people understand and manage the physical and psychological side effects of treatment.


Dr. Lashkari is a native of Santa Monica.  He completed his undergraduate medical degrees at UCLA and his fellowship in hematology/oncology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center.  In addition to his private practice in West Hills/Tarzana, Dr. Lashkari is a clinical instructor for the UCLA Department of Medicine, as well as a volunteer for the American cancer Society and the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

Chemo Brain: The Effects of Chemotherapy on the Brain
with Carole Superfine and Jeanette Nagai

Chemo brain is a common term used by cancer survivors to describe thinking and memory problems that can occur after chemotherapy. Learn strategies to promote attention, concentration, memory, word finding and processing of information to help with daily
activities. Participants will be provided with handouts outlining these strategies as well as resources to help promote brain function.

Carole Superfine has a master's degree in Speech Language Pathology. She has worked for Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center since 2001 providing outpatient therapy addressing speech, language, cognitive and swallowing deficits impacting adults.

Jeanette Nagai has a master's degree in Speech Language Pathology. She has worked at
Los Robles Hospital since 1992 where she currently manages the Speech Pathology
Department. Ms. Nagai also spent 9 years working in Speech Pathology at Cedars-Sinai
Medical Center.

Ask the Doctor about Colorectal Cancer

Dr. Lenz will present state-of-the-art information about colorectal cancer:  current and cutting-edge treatments, symptom/side-effect management strategies, the social and emotional challenges of the diagnosis and survivorship issues specific to people with colorectal cancer.  His presentation will be followed by questions and answers. 

 

Dr. Lenz is Professor of Medicine and Professor of Preventive Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at Keck School of Medicine at USC. He is Co-Director of both the Colorectal Center and the GI Oncology Program at USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. A light brunch will be provided.
