    Parenting and Coping with the Impact of Childhood Cancer

    An interactive workshop to provide support for parents coping with childhood cancer. Parents will learn skills to help in communicating with their child and integrating communication skills in helping their child express and cope with their emotions.
    The children and teen's program will meet at the same time as the parent's program. Kids Circle facilitators, whom are therapists specializing in working with children and cancer, will guide the children in an art project.

    Marilu Duarte, LMFT, has a Masters of Science degree in counseling with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy. She has 9 years of experience working with patients and families affected by life-threatening illness and grief.

    There will be dinner from 6:30-7pm with the workshop following at 7-8:30pm.

    This is an ongoing series of comedy nights made possible by the funds raised at the Stand Up for Cancer Survivors fundraiser held in 2009.

    Frances has been working on Bravo's reality show called The Real Housewives of Orange County. It will air late this fall and Frances will be the one with the real personality, sarcastic mouth, and smallest boobs. For these reasons, Bravo did not pick her as a main housewife, but, is the "friend outside the gates" and in the process of moving into lovely Coto de Caza. To learn more about Frances, click here.

    Pam received her Master's Degree from Yo San University in 1999, graduating with highest honors. She has been practicing acupuncture since 1999, working for the past 7 years almost exclusively with cancer patients.

    This is one of a series of talks centered on different Chinese medicine modalities and their use in the continuum of cancer care (from diagnosis through "survivorship").
    Future presentations will be on Chinese herbal medicine, Nutrition from a Chinese Medicine perspective, and therapeutic exercise and bodywork (massage).

    For nearly three decades Dr. Silvana Martino has devoted her career to improvements in breast cancer care. She is a nationally recognized oncologist for her contributions to the advancement of breast cancer treatment and research. Dr. Martino is the Director of the Breast Care Program at the Angeles Clinic and Research Institute in Santa Monica and the recipient of The Wellness Community's Celebration of Excellence award.

    Dr. Cathie Chung's career is also dedicated to the advancement of cancer care in academia and in the community. Formerly of The City of Hope Cancer Center, Dr. Chung has expertise in novel biologic therapeutics and targeted agents that interfere with how a cancer develops and grows. Dr. Chung began her career in Medical Oncology at Stanford University and also has a PhD in Physiology. Drs. Martino and Chung have contributed to state of the art, paradigm-changing therapies that have progressed from the clinical laboratory to the bedside.

    Most participants can control and manage their physical pain. You can use the extraordinary power of your own mind to lower pain in conjunction with any other medical program in which you are now participating. Through the use of visualizations and feelings using "The Control Room," The Shrinking Blob of Pain'" and others, it is possible for participants to lower the pain that they may be experiencing.

    You will learn how to do this on your own in the privacy of your home or office; you will take from this workshop mental scripts and mental formulas that will permit you to take control of your pain.

    Paul Feiger is a certified instructor of hypnosis and has been actively working with clients for the past six years in Thousand Oaks. He has earned his Master's degree in Counseling Psychology and is working towards his license in Marriage and Family Therapy as an intern at the Wellness Community.

Together couples will learn and practice problem solving techniques that have proven effective for tackling the challenges that cancer can have on a relationship.
