People who have experienced breast cancer know that it's more than just treating the tumor, there are often emotional and social challenges to overcome as well. In fact, a recent survey showed that four out of five women experience distress due to a breast cancer diagnosis. The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura recognizes that women who have faced breast cancer are more than patients, more than survivors and more than their breast cancer. That's why we hope you'll join The Cancer Survivor's Breast Cancer M.A.P. (Mind Affects the Physical) Project, a new movement to identify and address the emotional and social needs that accompany a breast cancer diagnosis. This registry of breast cancer survivors is a critical step in understanding the impact of breast cancer and ultimately discovering innovative ways to address them. This is a project of the Cancer Support Community, of which TWCVV is local affiliate.
Participating is easy. All it takes is two
simple steps: Help change the breast cancer experience for the millions of women who live it every day. Together, we can make a difference!
Cancer survivors and support people in our community celebrated survivorship on May 23 by walking in the Breakaway Mile of the Amgen Tour of California. Many TWCVV participants, including those pictured, crossed the Stage 8 finish line before the professional riders. Participant Bob Iritano, with TWCVV President Suzanne Drace, had the opportunity to present flowers to the winning cyclist of Stage 8. Actor Patrick Dempsey was also part of the event! Our thanks to Amgen and Breakaway from Cancer for providing this special event! Please enjoy our Breakaway from Cancer photos on our Facebook page.
We are pleased to report that the Tribute Wall has been stuccoed by Acosta Plastering, who also repaired and re-stuccoed the existing wall on our grounds. The photo shows the Tribute Wall. The Tribute Tiles have been engraved and will be installed in the next few weeks. Cal-State Fencing removed the protective fencing around the trees last week. Conejo Complete Landscaping is finishing the trenches and completing the irrigation system. The engraved pavers/bricks were ordered this week and will arrive by the end of the month for installation. Many thanks to Norm McDonald, Len Chapman and Jeff Boyer of The Honey-Do Boys for caulking and painting the newly-constructed South Wall of our building. With the help of the donors, businesses, and volunteers who are contributing, the Garden of Hope is continuing to take shape!
Thanks to everyone who attended our annual National Cancer Survivors Day Picnic on Saturday, June 5! It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate life with our participants, family, and friends. Please enjoy the photos on our Facebook page and feel free to leave comments!
