Friday, July 10 When there is a diagnosis of breast cancer, each person in the family is affected to some degree. This workshop will focus on the impact of a breast cancer diagnosis on the family including spouses, partners, children, parents, siblings and extended family members. A short video followed by an interactive discussion will be facilitated by TWC Associate Program Director, Jodi McIntosh. Jodi is a licensed marriage and family therapist, clinical supervisor at the Mitchell Family Counseling Clinic in Northridge, and faculty in the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling at California State University, Northridge. Thursday, July 16, 6:30-8pm And the winner of the "Understatement of the Year Award" is: "Having Cancer Can be Stressful!" This seminar offers an eclectic approach to managing stress through discussion, hands-on-work and take-home activities. Ed Rockey is a two-time cancer survivor and professor of Applied Behavioral Science of Pepperdine University in Westlake Village. He has conducted "Success over Stress" seminars for many organizations. This workshop will help you learn how to take control of the stress that is an inevitable part of life and cancer. Friday, July 17, 2-4 pm A hand or foot massage can help promote wellbeing and relaxation within minutes! Learn simple Swedish massage techniques for the hands, feet, head, neck and shoulders. Bring a friend, partner, or caregiver to the workshop so that you can learn and practice the techniques on each other under the guidance of licensed massage therapist, Paul Hurbace. Paul is the owner of Coastal Wellness Connection located in Somis. He completed over one thousand hours of advanced training in massage, bodywork, and wellness programs. He trained at the School of Intuitive Massage and Healing, Santa Barbara. with additional advanced training at the Biodroga International Training Centers in California, Nevada, and Germany. Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing; no disrobing required. Participants MUST bring a practice partner and your own light massage oil or lotion. Thursday, July 23, 6:30-8:30 pm Aggressive cancer therapy can have a powerful effect on normal cells, as well as cancer cells. The mouth is especially prone to damage from cancer treatments. Flora Stay, D.D.S. will discuss the importance of oral health for cancer patients, manage side effects, and prevent painful oral complications during cancer treatment. Dr. Stay earned her Doctor of Dentistry degree from UC San Francisco; she is a professor in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at USC and clinical instructor in the Department of Periodontology at UCLA. Thursday, July 30, 7 - 8:30 pm Take control of your fears and anxiety about pain, or the anticipation of future pain by getting the straight facts about cancer pain myths. Can pain medicine really control pain? Can I get addicted to pain meds? Could complaining about pain distract a doctor from curing my illness? Is pain a sign that my illness has gotten worse? Are the side effects of pain meds worse than the pain itself? Should pain meds be "saved" in case the pain gets worse? Bring your questions, concerns, thoughts, and feelings about these and other beliefs about pain. This workshop is informative and helpful even if you're not currently experiencing pain.
