On Friday, June 5, The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura celebrated 18 years of providing free programs of support, education and hope to people with cancer and their families. The 18th Anniversary "Celebration of Life" Gala was an inspirational event and a tremendous success, thanks to the dedication and selfless efforts of this year's event contributors.
Special commendation goes to our Sponsors:
We also want to thank:
Our sincere gratitude goes out to the Gala Committee for their leadership and dedication, and to the many volunteers for their hard work and commitment to making the event such a success. The Cancer Survivors Day Family Picnic on June 6 was also a success, thanks to the following contributors:
Dr. Terry Paulson and his wife Lorie have been active supporters of The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura since it began eighteen years ago. Now, the Paulsons have made the choice to leave a legacy of support through Planned Giving. The Paulsons have set up a fund through the Lutheran Community Foundation that will provide support to their designated charities after their passing, as long as the charities remain under IRS Guildelines. The fund is connected to their life insurance plan. "To me, estate planning is not a negative thing, it's an affirmative thing," says Dr. Paulson. "It allows your sense of purpose to continue far beyond the days that you have on earth." The connection between the Paulsons and TWC V/V started 18 years ago, when their neighbor, Marty Nason, began talking about a dream she and co-founder Beth Kin shared. They wanted to open a Wellness Community in the Conejo Valley. Through his work as a psychologist, Dr. Paulson knew how essential emotional support was for people fighting cancer. He also had a more personal connection to Marty's dream: he had lost his own grandfather to cancer, and his mother and brother were both cancer survivors. The Paulsons saw the potential in having a local Wellness Community, and became involved early on as donors, advisors, and volunteers. Dr. Paulson currently serves on the Professional Advisory Board and recently made an encore performance as Master of Ceremonies at the 18th Anniversary Gala on June 5. "The world has headaches, and some organizations, like TWC V/V, provide the aspirin," says Dr. Paulson. "This organization is embedded in the DNA of this community. I was there when this dream was just starting, and to see it operating and making a difference is very satisfying." For the Paulsons, it is equally satisfying to know that they can leave a legacy of support for an organization they have been involved with for so long, no matter what the future holds. "There are tough years for organizations that depend on giving, and we are certainly in one of those right now. Planned giving can help through the years when current giving is strained." Terry Paulson, PhD is an international keynote speaker and the author of five popular books. Learn more at www.terrypaulson.com.
Any challenges to our health frequently prompt discussions of life goals and subsequent legacies. How and by whom do we want to be remembered? Here at the Wellness Community Valley/Ventura, we can help you answer those questions. A planned gift with the Wellness Community can provide you with great peace of mind by meeting your financial and charitable goals AND establishing a significant legacy for the future. Planned gifts offer benefits that can make a difference in your life, just as your gift will make a difference for generations that follow.

The recent TWC V/V workshop "From Nature to the Body and Beyond" was hosted by the West Hills Radiation Therapy Center in West Hills on April 23rd. Bernard Lewinsky, MD gave a slide presentation of his photographic work comparing amazing electron micrograph images of the body to images in nature. After the presentation, participants were invited to explore the Center's Healing Art Gallery, which includes a collection of Dr. Lewinsky's nature photography, as well as the use of natural materials to create healing spaces throughout the office. Programs like these are offered free of charge to people with cancer and their families, thanks to support from the community, foundations, and corporations. 88 cents of every dollar donated goes toward programs like this one.
The success of the Book Sale in May was made possible by many caring and hardworking volunteers, local businesses, and the community at large, which donated a whopping 10,000 books! We offer heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers, the Board members who assisted, and Eyedentity Graphics, Meathead Movers, The Oaks, Platinum Party Rentals, and the Pods Company for their instrumental and generous donations of storage, transport, signage and space. The Book Sale was such a success that plans are underway for a July sale. We are currently collecting books at our office, 530 Hampshire Rd. (Hampshire at Townsgate), Westlake Village, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
Please spread the word, and check our
website soon for Book Sale dates.
