  • Dear Friend,

It's appropriate during such a hot spell of weather that this month's news is a fun report about pizza, summer camps, and an art museum.

As our donors, supporters and volunteers are aware, ECSM's mission is to bring light and hope into the areas and communities that are so very deserving of it. So many people are stepping forward to help ECSM change the lives of those in need, be it by volunteering, giving donations privately, workplace payroll deductions or matching gifts, or by giving goods directly to our programs.

This summer, we would like to acknowledge all ECSM's friends for making this possible, and to share with you our most recent news.

The kids at The Club at Collington Square, our after school program in East Baltimore, spent a wonderful week in the countryside, courtesy of St. John's Church in Glyndon. St. John's arranged a number of activities including a wilderness camp and a visit to Oregon Ridge.

The students had a wonderful time, enjoying the scenery and learning about their natural surroundings. In the words of Club Director Ted Smith,

"These kids are all too often exposed to nothing but concrete. To have them exposed to this kind of natural beauty is something they don't often have to chance to do."

The Club also made a visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art, accompanied by ECSM and BMA friend, Miss Dorothy McIlvain Scott. The BMA provided lessons about African art and African American artists. The students also created their own African masks.

In addition to its academic curriculum, The Club is now taking steps towards realizing a full arts program for the students, and the kids certainly seem to be enthusiastic about the empowerment of creativity.
