Advocacy
Letter to Congress
In early February, AJAS signed onto a letter addressed to Congress which expressed the concerns and interests of the Jewish community in the construction of the 2013 budget. Read the full letter here. ___________________________________________
Advocating Innovation in Healthcare Menorah Park Administrator Richard Schwalberg coordinated and led a fourth visit to the White House on February 8th, 2012. 18 professionals from across the nation came together to discuss innovations and collaborations as leaders and experts in eldercare, and best practices in health care. AJAS members Molly Forrest, CEO/President of the Los Angeles Jewish Home; Carol Silver Elliott, CEO/President of Cedar Village; and Janis Fleet, Past Board President of River Garden Senior Services joined the group. Larry Minnix, President and CEO of LeadingAge, said of the visit "What was abundantly clear is that [the group and the organizations they represent] care about people - seniors, families, friends, soldiers, and employees...You represent the REAL health reform story - doing the right thing for the right reasons - a powerful package of who and what it takes to transform human services for the vulnerable." |
ARTicipation: Pop Up Studio Village Shalom - Overland Park, KS
ARTicipation: Pop Up Studio, a project of the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art, allowed participants to create their own art and see it on display in Village Shalom's Epsten Gallery. The project included three layers of participation: community involvement with families and student groups, small group art therapy introduction, and one-on-one intensive art therapy sessions. The ARTicipation exhibit includes work from the workshops and an ever-changing "graffiti wall" available to anyone with a piece of chalk.
Participants ranged in age from 2 to 104. "ARTicipation is an experience that crosses age barriers," said curator Marcus Cain. "It brings out artistic abilities in all age groups, and makes everyone peers." ARTicipation: Pop Up Studio ended February 26, but Epsten Gallery will maintain the interactive art component into their other exhibits, which include both Judaic and secular themes. 34th Annual Gala, a "Magical" Evening Seacrest Village - Encinitas, CA
The Women's Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities held its 34th annual gala, "Magical Moments," on February 11 at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa. The event raised funds for the Resident Assistance Fund and honored Lisa and Gary Levine (pictured left, with family) for their over 20-year involvement and friendship at Seacrest Village. The evening included a delicious dinner and a live auction. Mind-boggling magic performances by Stoil and Ekaterina, Kristi, and Murray the Magician mystified the audience and left everyone wondering "how did they do that?" The fun continued on the dance floor to the music of the San Diego Society Beat Band. The Women's Auxiliary Committee has assisted Seacrest Village for over forty years in its mission to provide the best care for older adults, regardless of their ability to pay. All proceeds from the event went towards the Resident Assistance Fund. Click here to see more photos. |
Platinum Club Celebrates Centenarians Menorah Park - Beechwood, OH
The Platinum Club is a new club on the Menorah Park campus, created to celebrate those in their platinum years of 97+. The Club party bus will travel to each Campus residence to recognize current and new members and help them meet others their age, schmooze, laugh, and enjoy treats each time someone hits a milestone age. The Inaugural kickoff was held on Wednesday, February 22, with a combined 5,000 years of life in the room. "I think the Platinum Club is a great way to honor and celebrate our residents turning 100 years old across the Menorah Park campus. We expect this club to be a big hit on campus, and look forward to sharing the wisdom and insight gained from celebrating the lives of our centenarians, "said Nancy Sutula, Administrator at Wiggins Place. |

Homebound Mitzvah Program to Deliver Passover Packages MorseLife - West Palm Beach, FL

The Homebound Mitzvah Program of MorseLife, which has delivered High Holiday packages to homebound Jewish seniors for fourteen years, is bringing volunteers and Jewish seniors together for Passover this April.
Volunteers will deliver Passover packages on Wednesday, April 4, to Jewish seniors in Palm Beach County and surrounding areas. The packages will include traditional kosher Seder meals, matzoh, wine, a large print Haggadah and a DVD of a Seder conducted by Rabbi Alan Sherman, MorseLife's Director of Chaplain Services. Volunteers will also spend "quality time" with the seniors when they deliver their packages, in the hopes of lessening feelings of loneliness and isolation frequently experienced around the holidays.
The Homebound Mitzvah Program has served the area's homebound elders since 1997, and is funded by community philanthropists and a grant from the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. |
