The Jewish Home Visits Israel Fairfield, CT
After 1 year of planning, an incredible journey took place from November 13-22, 2011 as 8 Residents of The Jewish Home for the Elderly and 3 people from Hollander House travelled together with clinical and support staff to Israel. The average age of the residents was 91.
"It was unbelievable how great everyone was on the trip," said Andrew H. Banoff, President & CEO of The Jewish Home. "Not one individual missed a single activity! We had a magnificent time and are all very grateful to the private donors who financed the entire trip." After arriving in Israel, the group went north to the Galilee, the Golan Heights, and the Sea of Galilee. The remaining five days were spent in and around Jerusalem. Read more...

Ohio's First Elder Abuse Shelter Mason, OH
Cedar Village Retirement Community next month will be launching the first elder abuse prevention shelter in Ohio and one of the first in the nation. With the creation of the Shalom Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, Cedar Village will serve as a safe harbor for victims of elderly abuse. The Shalom Center will care for abused seniors, aged 65 and over, from four counties in Southwest Ohio. Appropriate individuals will be accepted for admission for an emergency stay of 90 to 120 days. Upon admission, the care team will begin working to plan for a safe discharge to the least restrictive alternative. Abuse victims will be cared for in Cedar Village's 162 bed nursing home facility where a full range of health care and supportive services will be provided. Research indicates that more than one in ten elders may experience some type of abuse while only one in five cases is reported. The Shalom Center at Cedar Village will begin to provide much needed care for elderly abuse victims beginning next month. |

In 2011, Wexner Heritage Village was privileged to celebrate 60 years of caring for the central Ohio community. AJA Awarded Energy Grant Denver, CO
Allied Jewish Apartments of Denver, Colorado, was recently awarded a $1,731,000 grant from Energy Outreach Colorado to enable their 398 apartment units to receive a major update of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems.
The grant will allow the Allied Jewish Apartments to replace common area lighting and apartment lighting, replace refrigerators, heating and domestic hot water systems, and install isolation and zone valves. These combined upgrades will significantly decrease AJA utility costs and provide a more comfortable living environment for residents. In addition to the award from EOC, AJA also agreed to pay some additional dollars as their contribution to the project.
"The AJA buildings, which include 3 high rise apartment buildings, are 40 years old," explained AJA Executive Director Michael Klein. "Our heating, air conditioning and water systems are showing their age. Until now, we've only been able to deal with problems in a piecemeal fashion. It's a great relief that the energy grant enables us to replace old corroded pipes with these new systems".
It is estimated that Allied Jewish Apartments will realize savings of about $50,000/year in utility costs. The project is well underway and will take several months to complete.

Russian Newsletter at Seven Acres Houston, TX
At Seven Acres Jewish Care Services, a weekly in-house newsletter called Resident Speaks goes out to residents. Previously, this newsletter was not accessible to everyone - Seven Acres has roughly 20 residents from the former Soviet Union, most of whom read little or no English. In an effort to include Russian speaking residents in the Seven Acres community, a version of the newsletter is now being published. Natalya Fertelmeister, a resident, initiated this project when she saw this need. Now she works every week to create and translate each newsletter with the help of her daughter-in-law and Sue Cororve, Director of Recreation and Volunteer Services at Seven Acres. Read on... |
