Transportation Grant for The Jewish Home Fairfield, CT
The Jewish Home for the Elderly, is pleased to announce the receipt of a $24,000 challenge grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation. The grant is for the Transportation Program for Bridgeport area seniors who attend Grasmere by the Sea Adult Day Services.
"In today's difficult economic environment this generosity is deeply appreciated and assures clients will have accessible transportation to the comprehensive health, social and rehabilitative services we provide," said Michael Hebert, Director of Grasmere by the Sea Adult Day Services. Read more...

Village Shalom Hosts its First Wedding Overland Park, KS
Like other Jewish-sponsored retirement communities, Village Shalom has celebrated many life-cycle events through the years - bar mitzvahs, brit milah (ritual circumcision) ceremonies, memorial and shiva (mourning period) services. Now it has added "wedding" to the list.
Roberta Pollack and Sam Goller were married recently in a traditional Jewish ceremony in Village Shalom's Appleman Synagogue, with nearly 100 family members and friends attending from across the country. The couple chose Village Shalom not only for the synagogue's beautiful setting, but to enable the groom's grandmother, Rose Stolowy, to attend with ease. Rose, a Village Shalom Assisted Living resident, is 100 years of age. Read more...

Cedar Village Honored for Artistic Program Mason, OH
LeadingAge Ohio presented Cedar Village with its Excellence in Service for Nursing Facilities Award. The award recognizes Cedar Village's Opening Minds through Art program, which Cedar Village runs in partnership with the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University. The honor is given to an organization displaying outstanding initiative, motivation and leadership in quality skilled nursing services.
Cedar Village's Opening Minds through Art program is based on the principle that individuals with dementia are capable of expressing themselves creatively. The program relies on strengths-based psychology, capitalizing on what people with dementia can do. The approach was developed by Dr. Like Lokon, who works at the Scripps center. Read more...

AQESS Director General Award Quebec, Canada

Congratulations to Barbra Gold, Executive Director of Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre and Jewish Eldercare Centre, on receiving a prestigious award from the Quebec association of health and social service establishments (AQESSS). Ms. Gold received the award given to an Executive Director demonstrating exceptional leadership. She was recognized for being the architect behind a geriatric center of excellence and for her role in shaping the way geriatric care is provided on a local, national and international level. The award was announced on Ms. Gold's 20-year anniversary as Executive Director.
AQESSS (Association Québécoise d'Etablissements de Santé et des Services Sociaux) is an organization made up of the key stakeholders at over 135 Quebec health facilities including hospitals, CSSSs and university teaching hospitals. The mission of AQESSS is to bring together, represent and support its members in order to ensure high quality services in Quebec's health and social services network.
