A Day of Remembrance

Holocaust Remembrance Day at Abramson Center

Rabbi Joshua Zlochower, LMSW, director of Chaplaincy Services at the Abramson Center for Jewish Life, and Abramson Center residents Adela Matyas and Lucy Berger participate in a candle-lighting service held at the Center on May 2nd to honor the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust. The service marked the Center's observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah), the nation's annual commemoration of the Holocaust.

Defending Medicaid

On May 24, 2011 the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) hosted a conference call to discuss strategy and advocacy to defend the Medicaid program against Congressional proposals that will drastically harm the program and its delivery of services to the most vulnerable in our communities. AJAS members are encouraged to visit www.jewishfederations.org/health and click on "Medicaid Action Alert Kit" to learn more and take action.

Pen Pal Project Brings Generations Together

In this age of emails, texting and Facebook, it is reassuring to know that the time-honored practice of handwriting letters is not lost. In fact, a recent pen pal project pairing fifth-graders from Blue Valley School District's Mission Trail Elementary School and residents of Village Shalom, a continuing-care retirement community in Overland Park, did more than revive the art of correspondence; it fostered some new intergenerational relationships.  Click here to read more...

IDF Visits The Jewish Home

Every year the Jewish Community Center, Stamford, hosts members of the Israel Defense Force (IDF) to build bridges between Americans and Israelis, to learn about each other person-to-person while building lasting relationships and a profound sense of extended family.  A visit to The Jewish Home, Fairfield, is always part of the busy itinerary.

When the officers came to the Home on 5/10/11, residents listened attentively to their presentations and enthusiastically showed support. The residents remember when Israel first became a state and found great meaning in personally thanking the officers, and everyone they represent, for their dedicated service to protect the dream that came

true.

The 22nd Golden Olympics at Gurwin Jewish Nursing Home

"This year I took home 4 gold metals, 1 silver and 1 bronze!" said John Nelson, 79, one of the nine athletes from the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Commack who competed in the Suffolk County Golden Games in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center at St. Joseph's College (Patchogue) on May 13th.  The event, in its 22nd year, capped off a celebration of National Nursing Home Week (May 8th - 14th), and was attended by teams from 13 Suffolk County Nursing Homes.
