Los Angeles Jewish Home Dedicates Torah for the Ages
Reseda, CA
On Sunday, January 23, the Los Angeles Jewish Home celebrated the completion of the Torah for the Ages project with the dedication of a Torah written exclusively for the residents of the Home. The new Torah was blessed by Rabbi Sheldon Pennes, the Home's Jack H. Skirball Director of Spiritual Life; and Rabbis Anthony Elman and Rita Hertzberg, rabbis for the Home's Eisenberg Village and Grancell Village campuses, respectively. "Today we are dedicating a Torah written for us with the hands-on participation of our residents, families, and community members," said Reggie Scheer, a resident who served as co-chair of the Torah for the Ages Committee. "This Torah will last long into the Home's second century and truly be a Torah for the Ages." Resident and co-chair Bob Hirsch added, "It's not often a community has the opportunity to witness the dedication of a new Torah."

Volunteer Recognition
West Palm Beach, FL
MorseLife recently held its annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, which paid special tribute to individual and group volunteers from throughout Palm Beach County who gave nearly 28,000 hours of their time in 2010. Volunteers who reached 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 year milestones were also honored.
Volunteer opportunities include everything from visiting with residents, sharing talents and skills, working in the Morse Geriatric Center or The Tradition of the Palm Beaches gift shops and the Nearly New Thrift Shop. Also delivering kosher meals to homebound seniors, providing clerical support and assisting with religious activities. "The goal of the Volunteer Department is to match people with their specific talents, experience and interests," said Nadine Greenberg, MorseLife Director of Volunteer Services. "It is wonderful to see so many individuals of all ages and backgrounds willing to make a difference." At the end of the program, Greenberg presented a symbolic "check" for $580,776 to MorseLife chairman Terri Sriberg, representing the estimated value of the 27,855 hours of service contributed by all volunteers in 2010.
