Greetings!

The excitement of a new school year has me singing a favorite childhood song: "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other's gold." As Skokie Public Library's Preschool Services Coordinator, I'm so much looking forward to reconnecting with veteran preschool teachers and establishing relationships with those new to Skokie. Here at the Library, we're celebrating the beginning of school with new preschool programs and new early literacy materials. We're also continuing our old traditions of hosting two free teacher workshops and the annual Preschool and Child Care Fair. It's going to be a great year!

Don't have a library card? Skokie preschool and child care center directors may register for a free business Library card for each of their teachers by submitting, on company letterhead, a written statement of authorization that lists each teacher to have a Library card. Home child care providers may register for a business Library card by showing identification with address and their child care license. Please renew your account at the beginning of each school year by providing an updated list of staff members. Go to our website for detailed instructions and a sample statement of authorization. Book Links: New Books from "Old" Authors
cover
A number of our favorite picture book authors and illustrators are releasing new titles this fall. Maurice Sendak's Bumble-Ardy tells the story of a nine-year-old pig who has his first-ever birthday party. The story may sound familiar, as the book is adapted from the same title of a video short played on Sesame Street in 1971. The Library will be hosting a special exhibit of Sendak's work this winter. More details will be provided in the December issue of Early Learning News.

coverThe Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories
by Dr. Seuss is a buried treasure of seven newly discovered stories previously published in magazines. It's our first helping of new Dr. Seuss since 1990!

coverEric Carle's first new book in four years is entitled The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse. Inspired by expressionist painter Franz Marc, it tells a simple story of a proud child who paints a variety of bold, colorful animals. Even though you can see the whole book on YouTube, I know you'll want to reserve a copy from the Library!

coverBill Martin's 1967 Ten Little Caterpillars has been reissued with new illustrations by Lois Ehlert, his partner in Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Each caterpillar is capable of turning into a butterfly, but only one does. Don't worry, you can see what type of butterflies (or moths) the caterpillars would have become at the back of the book. There's no doubt you'll be pairing this book with readings of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Web Links: Making Parents Partners

We know how important it is that parents engage with their children in reading and learning activities. How can you get parents to partner with you in their child's education? The first thing that comes to my mind is to encourage them to get a library card and visit the Library! For more ideas, watch the Making Parents Partners video on the Reading Rockets website.

Holly's Helpful Hints
We often talk about reading books with children but forget about the value of magazines. Skokie Public Library carries a large number of children's magazines filled with bright pictures, short stories, simple words, and large fonts. Many include learning activities related to the issue's content. Next time you're in the Library, check out one of the following magazines for young children:
  • Babybug
  • Chirp
  • Click
  • Highlights High Five
  • Humpty Dumpty
  • National Geographic Little Kids
  • Turtle
  • Wild Animal Baby

We think magazines are so important we are giving away five Cricket Magazine Group subscriptions. If you'd like to be entered in the drawing, email me your name, school, and phone number by September 30 with "magazine drawing" in the subject heading.

Let's get those kids ready to read!
