Greetings!

As the school year draws to a close, I'm grateful for the work you do with Skokie children. It always warms my heart to visit engaging classrooms with caring teachers and young children who love books! Please keep in touch this summer. We have a lot going on and are adding new services and materials all the time.

We Need Your Input!

We do our best to provide services of value to you, but we need your input. Would you please take a couple of minutes to fill out our survey so that we can best serve you? Not only will you make an impact on what the Library offers to early childhood teachers, but everyone who completes the survey will receive a Cat in the Hat Learning Library Event Kit (while supplies last).

Summer Reading Club
A Mid-Summer Knight's Read
A Mid-Summer Knight's Read
June 1 thru July 31

When it comes to children and books we are serious about having fun! A Mid-Summer Knight's Read will be the theme of this summer's reading club which begins June 1 and ends July 31. Come travel back in time and enjoy the time of Knights and Chivalry. The Youth Department will transform itself into the romantic version of life in medieval times. Children, from birth through 8th grade will be welcomed to "Run the Gauntlet" of reading fun. Four visits will be required to successfully complete the program and at each visit children will be invited to pull the sword to direct them to read under one of the royal banners. All those completing the reading requirements will be given the royal purple garment to signify completion. Please show your thanks and appreciation to our Summer Reading Club sponsors: Westfield Old Orchard, North Shore Community Bank, Allstate Insurance, Dengeo's Restaurant, Duxler Complete Auto Care, Evanston Subaru, Dr. Harold Krinsky, North Shore Theater for the Performing Arts in Skokie, and Smiles of Skokie.
Summer Storytime Schedule

Attention storytime attendees! We shake things up a little bit during the summer months. Please note that our summertime storytime schedule is different than the school year and does NOT require registration. Drop in for some fun!

Book Links
coverI just love Cynthia Rylant's latest series of picture books for toddlers. In the first book, Brownie and her cat, Pearl, shyly "step out" to a birthday party for the first time. This summer, Brownie and Pearl will take a dip in the backyard swimming pool. Little girls not yet old enough for Fancy Nancy will love the happy illustrations and sweet stories.

coverJane Yolen continues to write more of her humorous dinosaur books. Newest to the collection are How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Cats?, How Do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs?, and How Do Dinosaurs Laugh Out Loud? Watch this summer for her lift-the-flap opposite book, How Do Dinosaurs Go Up and Down?

Web Links: Disney Digital Books

If your children love Disney movies, they will fall in love with our new Disney Digital Books. Classic Disney stories such as Bambi and Alice in Wonderland, characters such as Handy Manny and Little Einsteins, and, of course the myriad of princess stories are always available for a 14-day checkout with your Skokie Public Library card. To launch a Disney Digital Book, visit the North Suburban Digital Consortium and click on the Mickey Mouse ears to the left of the page. When you've found a book you'd like to read, add it to your book bag and proceed to checkout. After entering your library card number, the book will be ready to launch. There's nothing to download. Although the stories are not automatically narrated, children can click on each word to hear it read aloud. How's that for print awareness? To help with reading comprehension, there is also an optional Trivia Challenge button that will ask a question about the story every few pages.

Holly's Helpful Hints
This summer the Used Book Sale Room at the Library will be overflowing with picture books as I continue to weed out books that do not circulate from our collection. There will be lots of books to choose from -- some old, some new, and all cheap! Children's hardcover books sell for $1 and paperbacks for 25 cents.

That's it in a nutshell! Have a great summer, and please complete our survey so we can make next school year the best ever.
