Web Links: Get Ready to Read
Are you looking for an easy way to evaluate your students' early literacy skills? Use Get Ready to Read's fun, 20-question online screening tool with your 4-year-olds. At the end of the screening, a score will indicate if the child's pre-reading skills are weak, strong, or somewhere in between. This research-based tool is designed to screen a child twice during the year before kindergarten to measure the child's progress. It is available in English and Spanish. Skill building activities and other helpful resources are also provided on the website. Get Ready to Read! is a program of the National Center for Learning Disabilities.

Holly's Helpful Hints
hollyKiss Your Brain
When children answer a challenging question in storytime I like to encourage them by saying: "Give your brain a kiss!" I demonstrate how to do so by kissing the fingertips of my hand and then touching the top of my head. The children immediately mimic my actions with a smile. I got this idea from a music session at a Metro AEYC conference last year. The presenters referenced Dr. Jean's Kiss Your Brain CD. If you're interested in attending the next Opening Minds Conference, it is scheduled for January 28-30, 2010 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner
The winner of last month's Storybook Safari was Carol Rosen of Hillel Torah Preschool! This month's giveaway is a 7x9 inch, black, personal planner with a date book, pen, pocket, and two-slotted flap for business cards. It is embossed with Illinois Action for Children's name and logo. For a chance to win this prize, email Holly by Friday, October 23 with "It's a date" in the subject line.
