Greetings!
You can help students maintain the gains they've made in reading during the school year. Encourage students to participate in one or more of the Library's reading programs. Take a look at what we have to offer....

| Summer Reading Club
|
|
June 1 through July 31 Skokie Public Library's 2009 Summer Reading Club is a great way to encourage students to exercise their "reading muscles" by continuing to read throughout the long summer months.
This year's theme is Read on the Wild Side! Children will be asked to read a minimum number of books and visit the Library five times during June and July. Children who reach the halfway point will have a chance to win one of our fabulous gift baskets loaded with books. Club members who finish by July 31 will receive a free ice cream treat
at the Skokie Nights Chicago Boyz Acrobats performance on Wednesday,
August 5. Skokie Public Library juvenile cardholders and Skokie school students who complete the summer reading program will receive the specially designed 2009 Summer Reading Club T-shirt. Our proud sponsors of this year's Summer Reading Club are Westfield Old Orchard, Dominick's, and Forsythe.
We will again award the Best Readers Award traveling trophy to the school with the highest percentage of students completing the Summer Reading Club. The trophy is presented early in the school year during a ceremony at the winning school and remains at the school for one year. Last year's winner, Highland School, hopes to repeat their winning performance. Encourage your students to sign up and bring the trophy to your school for 2009-2010!

BOOKING WITH A BUDDY
|
|
June 30 through July 31
Another way to help students maintain reading gains is our summer literacy program, BOOKING WITH A BUDDY. Students entering 1st through 3rd grades spend one hour each week reading with volunteers ranging from junior
high school students to retirees. Registration is required. Parents can learn more about BOOKING WITH A BUDDY and register their child(-ren) on our online Schedule of Events.

Summer reading lists
|
|
Help us support your efforts to encourage summer reading
Send us your summer reading lists and we'll make sure we have copies of the titles for students to check out when they visit the Library. We'll also keep the lists at our Youth Services Desk for easy reference when students or parents have questions.

Bookbags for teachers
|
|
One request and you're done for the year!
As you prepare your curriculum units for next school year, consider making a list of topics for which you would like supplementary materials such as books, DVDs, and CDs from Skokie Public Library. Send your list of topics and the projected start date for each unit to Susan Carlton. We'll track your "standing order" and make sure your bookbags are filled and ready for pickup 1 week before you begin each lesson.

New delivery options for 2009-2010
For the past several years we've been sending News & Notes via email to all Skokie Public Library registered "Teacher Card" holders. Beginning with the September 2009 issue, we'll ask you to choose your preferred News & Notes delivery method. - Teachers who wish to continue receiving News & Notes in its regular format will be asked to subscribe ("opt-in") to the News & Notes mailing list. This way, we're sending the eNews only to those who wish to have our bi-monthly newsletter delivered to their email inbox.
- Teachers who wish to keep up with News & Notes on their own schedule will be able to subscribe to News & Notes updates via RSS feed from the The Explorer, the Library's Youth Services blog. The RSS feed will announce the availability of a new issue of News & Notes and leave subscribers to decide if or when they wish to read.
Whether you subscribe via email or RSS, these new delivery options are designed to help you conveniently keep in the know about Library resources and services for teachers, students, and families. |
