The Green Scene November 2010

Dear Alumni,
I have been thinking about what to say to such a distinguished group of alum of 40,000+ in an official address. I decided just to come straight from the heart....I left Cass Tech in 1998 as Newsweek's "Outstanding Teacher of the Year." It was difficult leaving Cass Tech but I was promoted to an Administrative position at the Detroit High School for the Fine and Performing Arts. From there, I moved to Cody High School as the Assistant Principal in charge of the 9th Grade Restructuring School. I left there because my husband became the Principal of Cody School. We thought working together would be a great idea; however, the district said no to that, so I transferred to Finney High School as an Assistant Principal. During the summer of 2005, several principals and I were selected to study at Harvard University. It was a wonderful experience and I learned a lot and I have since used those skills over the years and will continue to utilize those skills at Cass Technical High School. I was then asked to interview for principalship at Pershing High School. Unfortunately, I was not selected as the principal but was selected as the administrator to head the Detroit Technology High School partially funded by the Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation. Years later, I was given the dual principalship for Pershing and Detroit Tech - yes, two proms, two homecomings, two parent-teacher conferences, two graduations, two of everything. One day my husband was looking threw a website and saw an opening for the principalship at Oak Park High School. I interviewed and Oak Park became my new home.
On the day I was selected to become the principal at Oak Park, I was leaving to study at Oxford University on a seminar on educational reform. I did my "tour of duty" at Oak Park High School for 4 years. It was a wonderful experience until the day that I received a phone call inviting me to interview for Cass Tech. I knew I had to bring my A+ game so I studied as though I was working on my dissertation to prepare for my interview for one of the most prestigious high schools in the world. In the end, I was fortunate to have been selected and I was honored and humbled to accept this prestigious position. The students, staff, have been gracious in my return to Cass Tech.
My vision for is for Cass to be a world class, student focused learning institution where teacher parents, community, and businesses are instrumental in the conception of a shared vision. I have 29 initiatives and some of them are:
- Site Based Management
- Underwater Robotics
- Partnership with the Detroit Economic Student Program
- Forensic Science Program
- Middle College Program for Grades 9 - 11 (Students will work on the Associates while attaining High School Diploma
- International Baccalaureate
- E/20-20 Online Credit Recovery Program
- Grade Level Advisories for Grades 9 - 11
- Fast Track Program that tracks High School Graduates in College
- Alumni Academy providing Career Pathways and Tutoring
This is indeed a dream come true. I already have alumni coming by to donate time and funds to make sure that we maintain the integrity and legacy of Cass Technical High School. I will need your support, knowledge, skills, in order to fulfill the demanding daily operations of our college prep high school. I look forward to meeting you guys and stop by - WE NEED YOU!!!!! I am borrowing a phrase from the world-renowned vocalists Ms. Alicia Keys - "I'm Ready!"
Sincerely,
Lisa Phillips
