A message from the CTAA Executive Board

Attention Cass Tech alumni and friends of Cass Tech:

The Detroit Public School System is in serious financial difficulty.  In an effort to balance the budget, they have decided to cut teacher services. This approach places the burden of the cuts directly on the students.  This causes larger class sizes, loss of curriculum style, organization and elimination of programs that keep students coming to Cass Tech high school, for example, the art and music curriculum.

At Cass, the cuts in our teacher staffing numbers have been accomplished by DPS in the following manner:
  • They are counting JROTC teachers as part of our regular staff.  The retired army officers pay is partially funded by dollars given directly to DPS for these JROTC teachers. If we have to count the 3 at CT, we lose 3 academic teaching positions.
  • CT capacity is 2150.  They are calculating our enrollment at 2019.  This shorts us 4 teaching positions.  If these cuts are allowed to happen the results are catastrophic!
    • We won't be able to maintain the curriculum structure that has been so successful
    • Our proposed alternative energy program will not be instituted
    • Music and art programs will be seriously constrained and most probably dropped
    • Class sizes will balloon as some disciplines will have to be combined.
As a concerned CT alumnus, we urge you to e-mail the listed board members, and staff of DPS demanding that the staffing cuts be canceled before July 31.  This is the drop dead date for CT to fill our needed teaching positions.
