New Principal Has Great Plans For Cass Tech! Ms. Lenora Ashford, CT’s new Principal, served as the Science Department Head for several years, and most recently as a VP at CT. CTAA Board members, President Larry Patrick, Chairman Ray Litt, and Dir. of Marketing & Public Relations Stephanie L. Jones, along with alum Blain Denning, had the opportunity to meet with Ms. Ashford to hear her plans for CT’s future. Here are some key areas that Ms. Ashford would like to focus on:

  • Bring back the technical aspect to the curriculum
  • Bring in an alternative energy program
  • Bring in new software and technology
  • Improve the athletics department
  • Address physical building problems

Preparations are being made to host class reunions during the same time as the Centennial Celebration so that everyone may participate. On August 4-6 2006, the Downtown Detroit Marriott will play host to the 10 year reunion for the class of 1996. If you have not yet registered please call the alumni office or you may also register onsite. Be sure to get your CT Alumni merchandise and join, renew or upgrade your CTAA membership.

Alumnus of the month
Shelby Newhouse (1944)
Shelby, a 1944 graduate, majored in music while a student at Cass Tech. After graduation he served in World War II and then spent 26 years as a broadcaster for WWJ TV and radio. The 4 time Emmy winning film and documentary maker now runs Insel Haus, a Bed & Breakfast located in Bois Blanc Island, Michigan. The Bed & Breakfast, which he operates with his wife Christa, won Michigan’s Best honors in 2006! For more information: www.inselhau sbandb.com

Nicole Johnson (2006) won First Place in the Michigan Teen U.S. Beauties Pageant & Third Place in the National Teen U.S. Beauties Pageant *Thank you to every CT Alumni that contacted Nicole and helped to pay for her trip to the finals!! We support our Alma Mater!!

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick (1988) was selected to be a trustee for the U.S. Conference of Mayors at their annual convention this year.

Cheryl Robinson (1984) has written 2 novels, If It Ain't One Thing and It's Like That. Both are set in Detroit and one of the main characters is a graduate of Cass Tech. For more information please visit www.cherylro binson.com.

James A. Smith, Jr. (1975) and Tracy (Mixon) Louis (1978),were married Saturday, July 15th in Detroit. They met 32 years ago in ROTC, but were never more than classmates. After 27 years they reconnected and found love in one another.
The CTAA is experiencing tremendous growth and we need volunteers to serve on our committees (Membership, Fund Development, and Communications) and assist at upcoming events.

Volunteers needed to work 2-4 hour shifts at the following events on August 26:
  • Market on Manchester Summer Festival
  • Mack Alive Fest
