NAKED TIP
Pay Attention To University Protocol, Or Else...
Dear Readers, Wanted to share this tip with you. It just came in from a college student in New Zealand (The Naked Roommate is truly international):
_____________
Dear Harlan, I'd like to offer a tip for your next book, and that is: pay attention to university protocol! In my first semester at college, I was very ill for the first six weeks of term and also the four weeks leading up to finals. The results from this year were to determine whether or not I would gain entry into Medicine. I didn't make it to a large proportion of my classes, and as a result my knowledge of the course material was very limited as finals approached. And, I could hardly ever study because I was too sick to focus or stay awake! I had a full medical certificate from my doctor, explaining my condition and requesting that my illness be taken into account when my exams were marked (yes, I did sit them - I thought that a little effort would potentially look better than none whatsoever). My university's rules are that your application for special consideration on medical grounds has to be submitted to the exam office no more than five calendar days after your last exam - I flew back home on the day of my last exam, and then continued to be sick for several days afterward. Six calendar days after my last exam, I'd finally managed to get together everything I needed to apply and hand it in... remotely, I might add, from halfway across the country. Subsequent contact from the university office informed me that my application was rejected on the grounds of (LESS THAN 24 HOURS!!!) tardiness. I went back down to my university town and appealed the decision in person with further back-up from my doctor, to no avail. Marks came back; I'd failed half my course and they refused to help me out. Early entry into Med school down the drain, endless bummer! In the second semester I got sick AGAIN right before finals, but I'd learned my lesson this time. I applied for compassionate consideration as fast as I possibly could when I fell ill. It worked! This time they listened to me - my marks were so much better. It just goes to show that officials can be absolute sticklers for protocol and will not hesitate to crush your dreams! I'm sure some are nice, but I've learned that it's really not safe to take that chance. I'll be taking lots of vitamin supplements and trying for Med again in a couple of years.
