Dear Harlan,
I have a friend whom I have known for a while. He is a good guy, yet he seems to have the thickest brain in the world. He doesn't understand the way he affects people. He prides himself on bringing home different girls every night with no intention of ever talking to them again. After his conquest, he'll proceed into the kitchen (no hand wash) and touch everything possible. He'll walk into my friend's room, steal his food, touch everything, sit in his bed, etc. I sat him down and talked to him like a dog many times, yet he never listens. I don't know what to do with the kid. He's a good guy, but a lot of people hate his attitude. He acts like he's better than everyone, even though his dad pays for all his drinking and he pays his friends to do his homework. How can I get through to him?
Good Friend
Dear Good Friend,
You keep telling me he's a good guy. Are you trying to convince me, or are you trying to convince yourself? It doesn't seem like he's such a good guy. He might be an entertaining guy, but screwing over women, stealing food and caring about no one other than himself doesn't make him a good guy. When you're done convincing yourself that he's such a good guy, think about how good being friends with him makes you look. You might get through to him by avoiding him and letting him know that being friends with him makes you look bad. Then again, he might not care. He can always buy more new friends.
