On October 2, we celebrated the opening of KIPP Austin Collegiate, the first KIPP Austin high school, with a special convocation ceremony to honor our Pioneer Class of ninth grade students.

The event featured messages from several speakers, including John Fitzpatrick, the Executive Director of the Texas High School Project; Rocio Mendoza, a Stanford graduate and current UT Law student who got her start at KIPP Houston; and Richard Reddick, Ph.D., from the Department of Educational Administration at UT.

The convocation also featured a special pen ceremony, during which selected community members personally gave engraved pens to each ninth grade student.  The pens symbolized each student's ability to write a new future for him or herself as a result of the unique opportunities KIPP Austin Collegiate will provide.

The evening ended with the music of Grupo Fantasma.

We'd like to extend special recognition and thanks to Mirage Networks for generously sponsoring this special event.

In addition, we also thank the following companies for providing their services that evening:

Best of luck to the Class of 2012!

Our KIPPsters have been busy this fall.  Some activities include:
  • Fifth grade students completed the Reader's Theatre Project in Ms. Kunthara's Reading class, where they gave mini-performances to improve reading fluency and articulation.
  • The ninth grade Leadership Class hosted a student/staff basketball game to raise money for our KIPP cousins in Houston, who are recovering from Hurricane Ike.
  • Saturday School this year features many extracurricular activities including American Sign Language, soccer, capoeira, dance and art.
  • Ninth graders researched recipes from Ethiopia after studying African civilizations in Ms. Barkin's Global Studies class.  They then participated in a food tasting to experience Ethiopian cuisine firsthand.
  • Middle school students participted in this year's first Spirit Day, which included dressing up in pajamas.  The upcoming November Spirit Day has an 80s theme.
  • High school students will celebrate spirit week this fall at KIPP Austin Collegiate.  Events will include a performance by the newly formed Cheer Squad in order to build school spirit!
Congratulations to all our KIPPsters!  The 2008-2009 school year is off to a great start.

On Saturday, October 4, more than 100 volunteers from the Real Estate Council of Austin (RECA) descended upon the KIPP Austin Collegiate campus to give it a much needed makeover.  The volunteers spent their Saturday landscaping, painting and creating an outdoor courtyard next to our cafeteria.  As a result, our campus now better reflects our efforts to create an environment of excellence.

Every project was met with dedication and enthusiasm.  Thank you, RECA, for your commitment to our students.
