About our Market Partners

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location.  Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries.  For more information on Cuyahoga Valley National Park visit their website.  For more information on the Countryside Initiative click here.

Assorted Winter Squash

Old Trail School Logo

Thank you to Old Trail School for their generous sponsorhip of Countryside Farmers' Markets.

Dear Market Supporter,

Local food enthusiasts are inspiring.  Just last week a family at the market shared that they had frozen 20 'dishes' worth of broccoli to eat throughout the winter months. And, they planned to make some apple sauce as well.   then there's my dear friend who decided to raise all the chicken her family would eat this year on their 2-ish acre yard in our hometown.  50 chickens!  Amazing.

I always wish I was more pro-active on the preserving and planning front.  I do freeze berries and a few vegetables here and there (as well as buy a whole hog!), but I could do much more if I took the time to make even a simple plan in the beginning of the year.  It would be helpful, I think, if I made notes about how much my family actually consumes of various veggies/fruits to give me and idea of what to aim for when freezing or canning,, and then actually make time to carry it out.

The growing season here is longer than we think- the market is still bursting with delicious produce.  Further, this will be the fourth year we will be going year-round with a very nice array of fresh veggies, thanks to our farmers utilizing season extension techniques.  Meat, cheese, preserves and baked goods never really seem to go out of season, although there are certainly seasonally available items in each category.

But it's true that once there's a nip in the air we all begin to behave a bit like squirrels storing nuts for the winter.  Many of our meat producers sell their animals (whole, half, quarter and so-on) for those that have the freezer space, which gives you locally raised meat at your fingertips for year-round eating.  I found this fairly detailed fact sheet from Cornell that outlines optimal storage conditions for various fruits and vegetables that will help you make the most of your market purchases and extend the length of the year you can eat local, even when it's a week without a market.  Please share your year-round eating story with us over on facebook.

See you at the Market,

Beth Knorr

PS: Don't forget about the Riverview Road closure to Bath Road!  Akron-Peninsula is a great alternative.

PUMPKIN GRATIN

By Jacques Pepin for www.epicurious.com

1 can (15.5 oz) pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

3 large eggs

1 cup heavy cream

3/4 cup grated Swiss cheese

3/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

1 tsp unsalted butter

1 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Spoon the pumpkin puree into a food processor and add the eggs, cream, Swiss cheese, salt and pepper.  Process for 10 to 15 seconds to combine.  Coat a 6 cup gratin dish with the butter.  Fill the dish with the pumpkin mixture.  Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese on top and bake for 35 to 45 minutes until set and lightly browned on top.

Makes 4 servings.

Dog Policy

While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets.  They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times.
