| Dear Market Supporter,
Not to dwell on the topic of weather, but I am really looking forward to the sunny, warm and dry day predicted for Saturday. Perfect fall weather, and a perfect day to linger at the farmers' market while enjoying all the sights, sounds and aromas of the bounty with which our farmers and vendors surround us each week. A feast for the senses!
And while this weather isn't as conducive to the warming stews I was so excited about last week, I'm still excited about the Delicata Squashes, apples and pears at many booths. And the concord grapes. And the sweet potatoes. Have I mentioned this is my favorite time of year?
One thing that is likely to be showing up at the market over the next few weeks is green tomatoes. I didn't grow up in the South, so these are somewhat of a food oddity to me, but one I'm embracing nevertheless. Aside from the fried variety, there seem to be a plethora of relishes, pickles and even cake recipes featuring this end-of-season delight. Fried green tomatoes are on our menu this week (I like mine sprinkled with Parmesan), and I'm hoping to tackle a relish over the weekend, but I'd love to hear from all of you what you'd do with a windfall of green tomatoes.
Finally, I have a shameless plea. We love our markets, and apparently so do all of you- We were voted #2 in the State, and #20 in the nation in the 'medium-size' category. We are humbled by this outpouring of love. Each year, Countryside Conservancy spends of $30,000 after revenues generated (by vendor fees, merchandise sales, etc.) to keep our markets operating smoothly and to be able to offer debit and ebt token services to make our markets convenient and accessible to all. We coordinate entertainment and cooking demonstrations, and even hold fun special events like our pie contest and salsa smackdown. If every market shopper were to donate just $30, we could easily offset this cost. Please consider a donation- it's tax deductible, and it goes a long way in supporting a well-loved community asset. Thank you!
See you at the Market,
Beth Knorr
Market Manager
PS: Don't forget about the Riverview Road closure to Bath Road! Akron-Peninsula is a great alternative.

Carrot Top Soup- Really
| |
Yes, really. And I don't mean a soup recipe authored by that curly, redheaded comedian.
As I wandered through the last Highland Square farmers' market last week I bought some beautiful carrots for snacking and just as I tore off the tops to put in our "WASTE NOT" compost bin, Beth, our market manager said, "You know you can make carrot top soup with those." No, I didn't know. She also told me the tops are a lot like parsley which I love and I don't just use parsley as a garnish, but that is a story for another day. I had to taste them for myself so I pulled off a bunch and as I began to chew those lacy green tops I was pleasantly surprised by the crisp parsley flavor and the hint of carrot aftertaste. Yummy. Now with the crisp flavor of the tops lingering in my mouth I was committed to the challenge and inspired by our Waste Not program to create a soup from root to tip.
The zest of the carrot tops spurred my vision of a chicken noodle type soup with wispy carrot fronds floating at the top. When I got home later that evening I search the internet far & wide. Not loving any one recipe in particular, I decided to take bits and pieces from all the recipes to create one of my own. Many of the recipes I found were pureed but I like a chunkier soup and with my immersion blender in appliance heaven I decided to make mine a little bit chunky & a little bit pureed, not to be confused with Donnie & Marie's song.
The recipe I came up with is below. We would love to hear from you so let me know if you make it, how you liked it, if you made any changes and post them on our Facebook page. I was pleasantly pleased with the results and would do it again, which for me, is always a good sign when making a new dish.

CARROT TOP SOUP
from Sage Culley
Ingredients:
1-2 Tbsp butter or olive oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, minced
Carrot fronds, finely chopped
6 carrots, diced
1 medium potato, diced
48oz (6 cups) chicken stock (or vegetable stock or water)
1 Tbsp poultry seasoning (sage, thyme, celery salt & savory)
s&p to taste
In A Soup Pot Sauté onions and garlic in butter or olive oil until translucent. Add carrots ,carrot tops, potato, stock and seasoning. bring to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
I finished by pureeing ˝ the soup doing small batches in my Cuisinart. I felt like the dish still needed something so at the end I added 2 handfuls of egg noodles, (kluski noodles would be wonderful), cook until tender. Enjoy with fresh shaved Parmesan or other sharp cheese & crusty bread.
