Thank you to Old Trail School for their generous sponsorhip of Countryside Farmers' Markets.

Dear Market Supporter,

Topsy-turvey weather certainly seems to be the theme for 2011.  While Wednesday looks to be warm-ish but damp, we're in for a cold snap on Saturday.  That means it's time to break out the winter boots to keep your feet warm, and a nice snuggly sweater.  Soups, stews and gratins are heating up the kitchen. (I made a nice one last night with red cabbage that even the kids liked!  I added some prosciutto and a pear, and also mixed some Gruyere in with the Parmesan.  Yum!)

What dishes are warming you up and keeping the chill at bay?  Share your favorites with us on Facebook!

See you at the Market,

Beth Knorr

Market Manager

PS: Don't forget about the Riverview Road closure to Bath Road!  Akron-Peninsula is a great alternative.

Mulch Leaves for a Green Lawn and Less Landfill Waste

It seems early to be talking about this but with the recent rain the temperature hasn't been the only thing falling. Lawns all over Northeast Ohio are peppered with the first layer of fall leaves. Consider approaching this year's fall leaf season another way, and save on chiropractor bills while we're at it: mulch the leaves into your lawn.

According to the EPA, organic material continues to be the largest component of Municipal Solid Waste. Yard trimmings account for 13.7% which is a close second to the food scraps (14.7%) mentioned last week. If we measure this by weight alone it's more than 50% of our landfill waste. We can easily reduce this volume with mulching instead of raking and bagging. Imagine the PRECIOUS resources of time, money and energy we could all save by changing one simple task.

Some benefits of mulching leaves into your lawn:

  • Reduce landfill waste-Making more land available for local farming!
  • Feeds your soil naturally for plant growth. Layer as much as an 1" thick for maximum benefits.
  • Eliminates the need for chemicals in your lawn improving your community water supply
  • Saves time, money & energy
  • Reduces pollution/allergens in the air
  • Having your lawn care service mulch will save them time which saves on labor which saves you money.
  • Grass clippings act as a natural weed suppressant choking off future weed growth.

The sites below offer great suggestions on mulching leaves into your lawn:
