About our Market Partners

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location.  Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries.  For more information on Cuyahoga Valley National Park visit their website.  For more information on the Countryside Initiative click here.

Dear Market Supporter,

Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation, states that a full one-quarter of U.S. adults eat fast food every day.  Part of the reason, he claims, is because fast food is so inexpensive. Affordable meals are on everyone's minds these days.  Health is also at the forefront of our national conversation. We all know the counter-arguments against regular fast food consumption: inexpensive fast food may lead to expensive health issues down the road. But still the myth persists that fast food is somehow cheaper than what we can make at home, especially if your family's meals focus on local, fresh and seasonal foods.

Slow Food USA has created a wonderful campaign to help dispel this myth, and encourage everyone to take back the $5 value meal this Saturday.  "Challenging" participants to create meals for friends and family using fresh, local products for less than $5 per serving in order to highlight the myriad healthy, nutritious meals you can make for under the common cost of a fast food "value meal."

I signed my family up to participate, but really- it's not so much of a challenge in our household unless we're really splurging. Shopping at the market provides a wealth of options for creating delicious meals for $5 per serving, and in many cases well below that bar.  Here are some links to others who have taken the challenge (or similar ones), that can help get your wheels turning if you're inclined to participate.  Jump on over to our facebook page to share your favorite $5 meal!

See you at the Market,

PS: Don't forget about the Riverview Road closure to Bath Road!  Akron-Peninsula is a great alternative.

Market Happenings

Music on Saturday to be provided by Bob Patetta.  Spring Garden Waldorf School will be joining us as well to provide fun activities for the kids!

Also, remember that the Roadrunner Akron Marathon is on Saturday, September 24.  That will have an impact on routes to the market due to road closures.  Be sure to follow this link to see which roads are affected and plot your alternate route!

Speaking of kids, now that the weather is turning cooler and the kids are back in school, we're all anticipating the indoor market dates!  We're happy to announce that we will be returning to Old Trail School- they were such gracious hosts last year.  You can find us indoors at Old Trail School on the following dates:

November 5 & 19;

December 17;

January 14;

February 4 & 18;

March 3 & 17;

April 7 & 28

We look forward to seeing all of you throughout the winter months!

A Word From Waste Not

        Waste Not tips for packing a lunch...

  • Reusable containers are key when packing lunches and help to eliminate packaging that ends up in landfills.
  • For kids' lunches cut up fruits into smaller bite size portions. Often when an whole banana or apple is sent in a lunch 1/2 will be thrown away.
  • Packing drinks in reusable containers can have a triple effect in reducing our waste! (1) You save money buying bulk beverages, (2) The drink canisters are resealable so there is no waste if they don't drink it all,  and (3) The packaging from the pouches or boxes are not going into our landfills.
  • Many kids rarely finish their school lunches mostly because their lunch periods are so short. A great habit to form with your kids is to have them finish their lunch leftovers as a snack when they get home.  If there are still leftovers, save it for their lunch the next day.
  • Adult lunches are important, too. I recommend making a big pot of soup on Sunday that you can take in your lunch throughout the week. Add a piece of fruit and a few crackers and you're ready to walk out the door in no time! Make a commitment to pack your lunch at least 3 days a week- it will not only help our planet, but it will also put more money in your pocket for your next trip to the farmers' market.

Baked Apples with Fennel

from FOODNETWORK.COM

This is a quick and easy side dish using some of the best Fall harvest ingredients!

** Denotes an ingredient available at the market

4 cored apples**

1 large onion**

1 fennel bulb-quartered**

4 tbsp softened butter

1 tbsp fennel seeds

2 tsp sugar

Mix softened butter with fennel seeds, sugar, salt and pepper to taste.  Use some of this mixture to grease a baking dish.  Rub cored apples inside and out with remaining butter mixture.  Place 4 thick onion rounds in the dish and top with buttered apples. Add the fennel bulb to dish.

Bake at 425 degrees about 1 hour or until apples are soft.

Dog Policy

While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets.  They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times.
