About our Market Partners
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location. Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000. Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries. | Dear Market Supporter,
The first tomato sandwich each year is every tomato grower's fantasy for the rest of the year. We feel the same way about our tomato tasting. This year is our 5th Annual event, and we are very excited to highlight the varieties our growers bring each year. The salsa competition with our friends from The Greenhouse Tavern and Noodlecat, and this year our tomato beverage demo with Marilou Suszko, illustrate even more reasons why the tomato is one of the top 3 items for which people shop at farmers' markets.
School starts for many in our area today. Have you stocked up on fresh veggies and other healthy items to include in your youngster's lunch box? (Not to mention your own!) Our Wednesday market at Highland Square is the perfect place to pick up those lunchtime staples.
Call it blasphemous, if you will, to include this alongside our tomato tasting information. But once schools are back in session the questions about our Countryside Winter Farmers' Markets begin rolling in. We will be able to share those dates with you beginning in September!
Finally, our market site is being shared once more this weekend with the Revere Cross Country Invitational. Come cheer the runners on as you sample tomatoes of all varieties.
See you at the Market,
Beth Knorr Market Manager PS: Don't forget about the Riverview Road closure to Bath Road! Akron-Peninsula is a great alternative. |

On Wednesday, be sure to stop by the demo tent to see what chef Donatella Salvadori has cooking up. We are in the height of the summer bounty, so get some free pointers on how to use it!
This Saturday is our 5th Annual Tomato Tasting and it's shaping up to be our best yet! From 9:00-9:30am, join chef Marilou Suszko in a guided tomato juice flight and learn to taste the differences in various varieties. Then put that knowledge to the test at our tasting table, where you can sample the many varieties our farmers have to offer. And don't miss the chefs from The Greenhouse Tavern & Noodlecat! They'll be duking it out once again in our Salsa Smackdown starting at 9:30am - stick around to sample their creations and vote for your favorite! All of these events can be found in the center of the market. Also joining us this Saturday is musician Tony Paparella (how many tomato songs do you know?) and the Master Gardeners with answers to your growing questions.

A Word From Waste Not

Back to School & Old Electronics
As students head back to school over the next few weeks parents and students will inevitably discover the long list of electronics that need to be updated, replaced or thrown away. Why not give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses of electronics yearning to be recycled. Cell Phones for Cancer, a Cleveland based organization, will take your broken, tired, & obsolete electronics and environmentally recycle them. Profits are donated to cancer charities. Before you toss that water logged cell phone set it aside in your Waste Not shopping kit and recycle it at the market.
Every market we will accept the following donations:
- Cell Phones
- Digital Cameras
- Ink Jets
- Toner Cartridges
- MP3 Players
- Video Game Consoles
- Laptops
TRASH-AT-A-GLANCE
Last Saturday at Countryside Farmers' market at Howe Meadow, the Waste Not program excitedly introduced 4 "New" stackable waste bins with the intention of collecting, sorting and diverting the waste generated during the market. These additional bins strategically placed throughout the market will be more convenient and easier for you to sort your trash into COMPOST, RECYCLE & WASTE. Refresher course below or stop by the Waste Not booth & ask one of our Waste Not volunteers.
- YELLOW bin - WASTE (Creamers/Straws/Styrofoam)
- BLUE bin - RECYCLE (Aluminum Foil/Plastics 1-7)
- GREEN bin - COMPOST (Lemons/Wooden sticks/Tissue)

So many tomato recipes, so little time. I had a hard time choosing this week, but went with the most quick and easy recipe to give you ample time to enjoy summer's final stretch. For you kitchen lovers, here were my two runner-ups: grilled veg gazpacho and homemade ketchup. Let me know if you try them!

| Dog Policy
|
While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets. They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times. |
