| Dear Market Supporter,
My first real gardening attempt was when I was living in Japan. It's no secret that space is limited in the multi-island nation, and the Japanese are adept at utilizing every square inch of space they have. Even into November they have root crops and hardy greens in their kitchen gardens. That first year I planted edamame, cherry tomatoes, peppers (a Japanese variety that is thin-walled- I wish I could remember the name of it!), and carrots. It was a moderate success in that I was able- with the Japanese Grandfather of the house- to nurture my plants and actually harvest some things. Tomatoes, peppers, and a couple of pods of soy beans. Not bad for a first try, with literally no experience.
The neighbor across the street had a huge vegetable plot, growing just about everything he could in that region. Eggplant, Chinese Cabbage, carrots, the incredibly important Daikon radish, turnips, among other things. Quick pickles that his wife made were often shared with our family and the other neighbors. So delicious and refreshing, they would accompany every meal.
For the next three weeks, the middle son of the family I lived with while in Japan is staying with us. Kai doesn't remember the garden I planted, as he was probably only three at the time. He's now 18 (time flies!) and enjoys cooking. I'm really looking forward to sharing Ohio's summer bounty with him, and swapping recipes as well- something I regret not doing more with his mom while there. What do you consider an iconic Ohio summer dish that I should share with him? I'd love to hear your ideas!
See you at the market,
Beth Knorr Market Manager

Once again in 2011 American Farmland Trust is holding their "America's Favorite Farmers' Market" contest. We are so excited to be in Ohio's top 5, but would really love to take the first prize!! We think our vendors are top notch, and deserve that recognition, don't you? Please take a few short minutes to vote for us. You can find our market by clicking on Ohio's Top five, or by entering our zip code: 44264 in the search section. Thanks for your support!!

| Reducing Waste at the Market | |
As many of you know the Countryside Farmers' Market Waste Not program has pledged to divert 90% to 100% of the market's 2 tons of waste by 2012. In an effort to make sure we are properly diverting the waste at each of the farmers' markets, we are in the process of designing easy to reference trash-at-a-glance posters for each of the prepared food vendors. Test your knowledge this week and review two of the cards completed for Crooked River Coffee and Gaelic Imports. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for new trash-at-a- glance posters and new Waste Not stackable recycle bins throughout the market.
Until then, here is a WASTE NOT Quick Reference:
- Mini pc Coffee Creamers, Food Service Boats, Plastic Straws & Stir Sticks are WASTE
- Wooden Stir Sticks, Sugar in the Raw Packets and Paper Napkins are COMPOSTABLE
- Plastic Cups, Plastic Lids from Cold & Hot Beverages are RECYCLABLE
Thanks for helping us reduce our farmers' market waste!

Zucchini Sauce
from Donatella Salvadori | |
By popular demand, from last Saturday's demo!
** Denotes an ingredient available at the market
4 small to medium zucchini**
3-4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves of garlic, chopped**
salt to taste
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
Parmesan to taste
1 pound pasta**
Cut the zucchini in half (lengthwise). Slice them with a food processor or with a cutting knife, making sure that they are approximately 1/4 of an inch.
Heat the oil in a frying pan and add garlic. Fry garlic until golden brown, then remove pan from heat to cool oil.
Add the zucchini and the salt to the pan, return the pan to the burner and cook on medium until the vegetables are tender. Add the whipping cream and let it thicken for a couple of minutes.
In a big pot of salted water, boil your pasta al dente and dress it with the zucchini sauce. If you prefer a creamy texture, you can blend part of the sauce with a food processor. Enjoy! |

| Dog Policy
|
While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets. They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times. |
