About our Market Partners

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location.  Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries.  For more information on Cuyahoga Valley National Park visit their website.  For more information on the Countryside Initiative click here.

Thank you to Old Trail School for their generous sponsorhip of Countryside Farmers' Markets.

Dear Market Supporter,

It's hot.  I know that is stating the obvious, but one of the ways we're beating the heat in our non-air conditioned house is by eating salads and fresh fruits.  Yesterday's dinner consisted of three different salads: Cucumber and Avocado Salad with Cilantro and Lime; Carrot Salad with Almonds & Dried Cherries in a simple vinaigrette; and the deliciously seasonal Tomato Basil Salad with feta.  Yum.  No stove required, and most of the ingredients can be purchased at the market.  And now that peaches are in season (woohooo!) dessert is just as simple.

See you at the market,
Beth Knorr

Apple, Peach, or Plum Cake Cockaigne

from Joy of Cooking

This dessert is a snap to throw together, and a great use for those fruits that ripen oh-so-quickly!

** Denotes an ingredient available at the market

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 to 3 tablespoons cold unsalted butter

1 large egg**

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

milk

4 cups sliced peeled apples, peaches, or plums**

1 cup white or packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Preheat oven to 425.  Grease a 9- or 10-inch round cake pan.

Sift together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt into a bowl.  Add butter.  Using a pastry blender or 2 forks, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.

In a measuring cup, beat together the egg and vanilla.  Add enough milk to make 1/2 cup liquid.  (If the fruit used is very juicy, reduce the liquid by at least 1 tablespoon.)  Stir into the flour and butter to make a stiff dough.  You may pat the dough into the greased pan with your floured palm, or spread it in part with a spoon and then distribute it evenly by pushing it with the slices of fruit when you add them.

Arrange the fruit in tight overlapping rows on top of the dough.

Combine white or brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter and sprinkle over fruit.

Bake about 25 minutes, until tester comes out clean.  Serve warm.

Dog Policy

While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets.  They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times.
