About our Market Partners

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location.  Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries.  For more information on Cuyahoga Valley National Park visit their website.  For more information on the Countryside Initiative click here.

Thank you to Old Trail School for their generous sponsorhip of Countryside Farmers' Markets.

Dear Market Supporter,

Does anything say "Happy Birthday, America!" more than a pie contest? At a farmers' market? In a National Park?  We don't think so.  If you haven't signed up for this fun celebration of our nation and of pie, please don't miss out!  And don't forget to wear your favorite apron just for fun.

You can also find everything you need to make your weekend of festivities delicious.  Blueberries, sour cherries and raspberries are coming into season now.  New potatoes are appearing.  Local, sustainably raised meat is ready to be cooked over hot coals.  Lots of fresh, crisp lettuce is still available.  Peas are sweet and delicious right now.  And there have even been some green beans popping up.  Extraordinary local cheeses are always my favorite part of the celebration!  We hope you'll make your local farmers' and artisan food producers' bounty part of your 4th of July celebrations!

See you at the market,
Beth Knorr
Market Manager

Market Happenings

Apron Ties & Homemade Pies has finally arrived!  If you haven't signed up for the pie contest, there is still time.   Click here to read up on the rules and throw your hat, er, pan into the ring.  Our esteemed judges have been chosen and they are: Darwin Kelsey of CVCC, Tami Mitchell of Dine-In Diva, Diane Sikorski of Humble Pie, and Paul Stehr of CVNP.  Best of all, you too can be a judge!  There will be a People's Choice category, so be sure to stop by the demo booth to pick your favorite.  Whether you're a fan of pie or not, come wearing your favorite apron and be featured on our blog!

Brett Gordon & Frank Krygowski will be providing a sweet soundtrack to our pie contest.  Come find out what kind of apron traditional Irish musicians wear!

Carla's Raw Beet Salad

from local food enthusiast Carla Owens

By popular demand, from last week's demo booth!

** Denotes an ingredient available at the market

8 side dish servings

4 large beets, peeled**

1 crisp apple, washed and unpeeled**

1 bulb of fennel**

2 bunches scallions, cleaned then sliced thinly**

juice of 1 lemon

2 T apple cider vinegar

3 T orange juice + 2 tsp grated rind

4 T olive or walnut oil

1/2 tsp Dijon mustard

1 T maple syrup

salt and pepper to taste

2 T fresh mint leaves, chopped or sliced fine**

1 T fresh parsley, chopped**

Optional: toasted walnuts and crumbled feta** or chevre** for garnish

Using a Japanese mandoline (or sharp knife), thinly slice beets and apple.  Working in batches, hold slices in small stacks and cut entire pile into thin julienne.  You should end up with a big mound of matchstick pieces that you can place in a large bowl.

Trim the stalks off the fennel so you are left with a round bulb.  Slice the top half of the bulb very thinly into rings.  Reserve bottom fourth of bulb and stems for another use.  Add fennel to bowl.

Add all remaining ingredients to this except garnish and toss.  Adjust seasoning to taste.  Depending on your preference for sweetness or acidity you can add more or less maple syrup, vinegar, or oil.  If you choose, you may add crumbled feta or goat cheese as a garnish.

Dog Policy

While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets.  They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times.
