About our Market Partners

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location.  Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries.  For more information on Cuyahoga Valley National Park visit their website.  For more information on the Countryside Initiative click here.

Assorted Winter Squash

Dear Market Supporter,

Father's Day has come to be synonymous with grilling in most families, but my husband prefers a nice breakfast of Huevos Rancheros. (Although we might do some grilling later in the day, too!) But don't worry, for those who stick to the traditional joy of cooking over fire for your fathers there will be plenty to choose from at the markets this week:  meats for the grill, plenty of veggies for sides and/or mains, and loads and loads of strawberries for dessert (shortcake, anyone?!)

It also seems like events are beginning to heat up for the summer, so don't miss an opportunity to get out and enjoy the wonderful happenings in our community.  See below for a smattering of those that are coming up.

See you at the market,
Beth Knorr
Market Manager

Garlic Scape and Almond Pesto

from Dorie Greenspan

Have you been wondering what those gorgeous, wild, curly, and vibrantly green things showing up at the market are?  They're garlic scapes, and are a spring-only, gone-in-a-flash treat.  They can be used many ways (use them raw where you would scallions, for example) but garlic scape pesto is a wonderful application - better yet, it's freezable so you can enjoy the bounty even longer!

** Denotes an ingredient available at the market!

Makes about 1 cup

10 garlic scapes, finely chopped**

1/3 to 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan

1/3 cup slivered almonds (toast them for a deeper flavor)

about 1/2 cup olive oil

sea salt

Put the scapes, 1/3 cup of the cheese, almonds, and half the olive oil in the bowl of a food processor (or blender, or use a mortar and pestle).  Whir to chop and blend all the ingredients and then add the remainder of the oil and, if you want, more cheese.  If you like the texture, stop; if you'd like it a little thinner, add some more oil.  Season with salt.

If you're not going to use the pesto immediately, press a piece of plastic against the surface to keep it from oxidizing.  The pesto can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple of days or packed airtight and frozen for a couple of months.

Dog Policy

While we love our four-legged friends, dogs are not permitted at the Countryside Farmers' Markets.  They are, however, permitted to play at Howe Meadow, walk on the towpath or elsewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, but must remain on a leash at all times.
