About our Market Partners

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is the partner for our Saturday morning market at its new Howe Meadow location.  Established in 1974 as a National Recreation Area, the park received National Park status in 2000.  Cuyahoga Valley National Park is also Countryside Conservancy's partner for the Countryside Initiative program, which offers long-term leases of farms within the National Park boundaries.  For more information on Cuyahoga Valley National Park visit their website.  For more information on the Countryside Initiative click here.

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is the partner and host of our Thursday evening market.  Stan Hywet is the historic country estate of F.A. and Gertrude Seiberling.  Built between 1912 and 1915, the 65 room Manor House and grounds are available to the public in keeping with the Seiberling crest motto "Non Nobus Solum" or "Not for us Alone."  For more information on this magnificent museum and its gardens visit their website at Stan Hywet.

Assorted Winter Squash

Dear Market Supporter,

Although winter doesn't officially begin until 12/21 this year, there is no denying it's here in full force.  School closings, the hum of snow blowers, and the scraping of shovels on the sidewalks are with us once again.  This is the time of year we really seek out comfort food, and where better to find it than at the farmers' market?

In addition to delicious foods, don't forget that we will have evergreens for decorations, as well as unique items for holiday gift giving.  Some of the items include: stained glass artwork, hand-crafted soaps, wool blankets and scarves, note cards, one-of-a-kind jewelry, crocheted items, and a book by local author Joel Mader detailing the unique historic school garden program in Cleveland.  Perhaps you'll find a little indulgence for yourself amongst the offerings, too?

Enjoy shopping with the bulk of our vendors in the gym, and then come on up to the cafeteria to enjoy musical guests Jan and Bobby Patetta, and choose from a plethora of ready-to-eat items, coffee, tea and more.  Sit down, relax, and enjoy before heading back out into the snow!

See You at the Market-
Beth Knorr
Market Manager

P.S. In the event of catastrophic weather, please call our office at 330.657.2538 or check the Old Trail School website for last minute market updates.

don't buy food from strangers

We are truly grateful for the overwhelming support you have shown us at the markets over the course of the past seven years!  We take pride in providing access to fresh, healthy food to all of our community members.

We hope that you find value in our farmers' markets, and will consider supporting our 'don't buy food from strangers' campaign.  Just $30 from each of our market supporters would go a long way to ensuring we can continue to serve you as well as our farmers with these important marketplaces.

Market Happenings

Christmas is just two markets away, so now is a great time to stock up on gifts and decorations - as you see above, there are many options!  And don't forget the gift of food - market tokens, which act like cash in the market, make a wonderful gift and are available at the information booth.  CDs are another great choice - Bobby Patetta will be sharing his signature mix of blues, rock, folk, & jazz in the cafeteria.

Potato-Cheese Latkes

Adapted from Epicurious, December 200

Celebrate the season of Hanukkah with these delicious potato pancakes.  Visit www.Epicurious.com for an accompanying spinach dip.

Ingredients

(** denotes ingredient available at the market!)

1/2 medium onion, peeled **

3 large potatoes (about 3 pounds), peeled **

2 large eggs **

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour **

1 cup grating cheese, coarsley grated (about 3 ounces) **

3 cloves garlic, minced, then mashed to paste with 1/2 teaspoon salt **

6 tablespoons vegetable oil

6 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup minced flat-leaf parsley, for garnish **

Preparation

Preheat oven to 200°F. Place 2 nonstick baking sheets in oven.

Using box grater or food processor fitted with grating disc, coarsely grate onion and place in colander set in sink. Coarsely grate potatoes, add to colander, and set aside to drain.

In large mixing bowl, lightly beat eggs. Whisk in flour, then stir in cheese and garlic.

Press potatoes and onion to extract as much liquid as possible, then add to egg/flour mixture. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Using wooden spoon or hands, mix well, but do not overwork.

In heavy-bottomed, 12-inch skillet over moderately high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon butter until hot but not smoking. Drop 4 scant 1/4-cup portions of batter into pan and flatten with spatula to form four 3-inch pancakes.

Fry until bottoms are golden-brown, 4 to 5 minutes, then turn over and fry until golden-brown and crisp, an additional 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain; season immediately with salt and pepper. Keep warm on baking sheets in oven while making remaining pancakes.

Using paper towels, carefully wipe out pan. Add 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon butter and fry 4 more pancakes. Repeat with remaining batter, wiping out pan and adding 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon butter before each batch. Just before serving, sprinkle with parsley.
