Virtually Sorted News March 2009
 cm picGreetings!

I was at a networking event the other day and was explaining what a virtual assistant does.  I explained that essentially we do admin - call answering, bookkeeping, typing etc.  His eyes widened "Typing?  What, like a proper old-school secretary?  Really?!"

Erm, yes, sort of - except less nail filing and with more gadgets!  So we've put together a few resources on the new-style typists and what they are capable of.

Enjoy!

An interesting read wasn't it?  But what would you think if someone sent you a letter like that?

In years gone by, the traditional secretary started to disappear from offices as computers meant that anyone could type a letter or chuck together a powerpoint presentation.  A few rare legal eagles hung onto their beloved Dictaphone tapes, but most people joined "the two finger touch-typing generation".  Meanwhile I still sat with a blanket over my hands learning how to touch-type at school.

Anyway, in the last few years there has been yet another revolution.  In the same way that technology made the typist redundant, it also revived her too.  As more companies implemented "type your own" policies, they got more and more complaints about quality of work, typos, corrupt documents and the length of time it took to get documents sent.  In fact, the ad agency I worked at in London revoked the mandate that "All account management staff must type their own documents" to state that only secretaries were allowed to create client-facing documents, because they had so many horrible disasters including one fee typo which almost lost them £1,000,000!

Companies also realised they were paying their £250-an-hour lawyers/surveyors/journalists to sit bashing their computer using the two-finger-touch-typing method was not a particularly good use of company time or money!  Enter digital dictation.

Instead of recording onto tape, the new style Dictaphone machines record onto audio files - exactly like your iPod.  You then connect the machine to your computer and it emails the audio file to our team of experienced touch typists who'll whizz through your work, proofread it with a fresh set of eyes, and return you a typed document via email.
