October is my birthday month and traditionally when I take a look back at what I’ve achieved. This year it’s a big birthday too!

Passive Income – The Holy Grail

Last year I underwent coaching with Action Coach (www.actioncoach.com). Business coaching is fast catching on in the UK and across the world for people who want to accelerate their business growth and profits. Because it was horrifically expensive (scarily so!) I asked for a guarantee. I asked for a full refund if I didn’t increase profits in my business in 6 months to pay for the cost of the course. One of the first things the Coach did was to give me a massive reading list. And the next thing he did was to work out exactly how much I was being paid per hour for all the work I did.

I was reminded of the infamous article by Steve Albini about how much rock bands actually earn – how had I managed to fall into a similar trap in my business? Thankfully, the Coach had the answer in the form of changing the way my business worked to make it more profitable and introducing passive income streams into the business which meant I got paid for doing nothing! I felt extremely triumphant in my third month of coaching to be able to tell him I’d earned £70 that morning whilst drinking a cup of tea – ah, this was the life! So how could you introduce passive income into your business? Well, one way could be by joining affiliate schemes whereby you get paid a percentage if someone buys a product featured on your website. Data – not just a Star Trek character!

Here at Virtually Sorted we get some real horror stories from clients about how they store their data. As registered Data Controllers ourselves we make sure all our data is collected and stored properly and kept secure. The worst story I heard recently was a lawyer’s office that suffered a fire, and who had religiously backed up all their data on disc – and then left the discs on top of the computer! Of course all the discs melted and all their client contact details, accounts, and legal documents were destroyed. Just to show how easily this could have been avoided, we recently had a hardware failure on one of our computers and it was simply a question of pressing restore from our off site data backup to put all the files onto a new computer.

It brings home the importance of forward planning when managing your data. For example, if you work as part of a team how do you manage sharing data and making sure you all have an up to date copy of say a marketing spreadsheet or a list of conference delegates?
