A Whisper of Feedom

Whisper

The final book in The Chronicles of the Spanish Civil War series!

Battles heat up -- not only those being waged by the soldiers on both sides fighting for Spain, but in the hearts and minds of the men and women who must sacrifice more than their dreams to save the lives of their loved ones.

In this meticulously researched novel, brave and idealistic Sophie, Philip, Jose, and Deion realize their only hope for freedom is escaping Spain's borders.

By continuing the story of this band of volunteers during the Spanish Civil War, A Whisper of Freedom proves that there are whispers of hope and liberty that resonate through even the darkest night.

July 2008
Hello!

My life is best explained by what piles happen to be on my desk.

Today, on my desk are ...

Plane tickets to the Czech Republic.

More adoption paperwork

Pages from my new novel I'm working on.

A contract for an article from Focus on the Family that I need to sign. (My fourth this year!)

Raffle tickets for a fundraising we're doing to raise money for our missions' trip

Children's curriculum I'm planning for our English camp

Information concerning our foreign exchange student who will be arriving from the Czech Republic three days after we return home.

Just writing all of that makes me realize that my plate ... err desk ... is full. Yet, I've been reminding myself to take time for fun. Summer in Montana is short! Too short to spend at my desk.

So despite the lists and piles, today I sat with my husband on the porch and just chatted. I ran an errand with a friend. Tomorrow I'm going to the waterslides with a few friends and our kiddos. And Friday night we're having a slumber party for the teens going on our Czech trip. We're going to watch Czech movies and practice the phrases we know ... all 10 of them! Fun!

Sometimes I think that I need to keep working and working to get the items marked off the list, but I quickly remind myself to make time for fun. Life is too short and the list will NEVER be done. So how about you? Want to meet us at the waterslides?

All God's Best,
Tricia

 ssHome To Heather Creek Series

I thought you would be interested in the new Guideposts original series, Home to Heather Creek!

About the series: Charlotte Stevenson's world is turned upside down when her daughter, Denise, dies in a tragic car accident. She ran away at eighteen and Charlotte has never forgiven herself. Now, Denise's children, abandoned by their father, are coming from California to live on Heather Creek Farm in Bedford, Nebraska. More

I wrote Book #2, Sweet September!

Here's the synopsis:

Harvest time at Heather Creek Farm is an exciting time, but the kids don't seem to be getting into the spirit. One day while he's wandering through the fields, Christopher stumbles across an old piece of metal buried in the ground. He doesn't know what it is, but he hides it in the shed.

That night, the garden by the house is uprooted. Who could have done such a thing? Charlotte is determined to find out, but is distracted when she gets news that Sam is failing school. The sullen teen is indifferent and won't study. He starts spending a lot of time with Pete. Though she loves her son dearly, Pete never finished high school, and Charlotte is afraid he'll encourage Sam to do the same. How can she help him get back on track?

A gripping story that examines the Stevenson family's history as well as its shaky future, Sweet September will bring you deeper into the loving community of Bedford and the deep ties of love that bind this broken family together. As they forge new connections, you'll be entertained, inspired, and reminded that God's grace can make all things new. Buy the book here.

This book was a lot of fun for me. A departure from the rigorous historical research and a chance to try my hand at something contemporary. I'm in process of writing book # 7 in the series right now.

Providential Happenstance

I just love the way God works. A few months ago I received this note from a fellow writer...

Hi Tricia,

I didn't post this on TWV, but since you played a role in this story, I thought it might interest you. In 2006 I had a story published in an anthology about my battle with anorexia nervosa and how I ultimately overcame the life-threatening eating disorder. Shortly after the anthology released, one of the editors sent me a letter she'd received about my contribution to the book. The woman who wrote it said that a dear friend of the family was battling an eating disorder and they thought she would never overcome it. But my story greatly encouraged them and gave them hope that it was possible for this young woman to get well.

Twenty months later, your TWV post about social networks prompted me to join ShoutLife. One of the first "friends" I made was a woman who read my profile and saw the cover of the anthology I just mentioned. She vividly remembered my story in the book because she was the one who wrote that letter to the editor. It turns out that she showed my story to the friend who was anorexic and in the twenty months since then that young woman gained 25 pounds and began competing in triathlons!!! My new ShoutLife friend told me, "You'll never know how many lives your story touched."

Had I not connected with this woman through ShoutLife, I'd have missed that encouraging testimonial about how God used my story to change a life.

Peace,
Sharon

Wow...how cool is that. God used my love of sharing info with other writers to His Glory. Just another illustration that God does give us the desires of our hearts for use in His Kingdom! I love when I get to see the why and how of HIS work.

Dying for a Crown

I could sense the frustration in the young doctor's stern voice. "You look like a prisoner in a Nazi death camp! You are starving, Sharon. You have to start eating." Dr. Fenton* had been assigned to my case while doing her residency in psychiatry. I was one of her first anorexic patients.

Later that day her supervising doctor ordered bed rest. With a blood pressure reading of 68/40, just standing erect caused my heart to race and my head to spin; yet I believed the doctors were over-reacting. I can't be starving; I don't even get hungry anymore, I argued to myself as I pulled the blankets over my thin, shivering frame and drifted off to sleep.

I developed the eating disorder anorexia nervosa two months into my first hospitalization for major clinical depression. One of the symptoms of depression is a change in appetite; mine vanished. I was no longer interested in eating and began to look quite thin. Having grown up believing I was fat, it pleased me to be losing weight so easily. This is the one good thing to come out of this miserable experience, I thought.

I believed I could control my weight-loss, and planned to return to eating normally once I was thin enough. But anorexics live in a world where normal is not possible, lies become truth, and reality is ignored. This is a place where flesh is fat and bone is beautiful. There is no such thing as "thin enough." Giving in to physical needs is weakness; wasting and withering are signs of strength.

My anorexia was partially a response to living an existence that always seemed frighteningly beyond my control. With my depression, life had become completely unmanageable. My body became my kingdom, the only thing I could rule. The treasures of the land were hollow cheeks and stick legs. My crown was made of bones.

Czech it out!

The Goyer family is part of a team of twenty people traveling to the Czech Republic to teach English and share the good news of Jesus. Please pray for our group, our trip, and for the hearts of the Czech people to be open to the message of God. We will be gone July 24th-August 11th.

And, PRAISE GOD...we received all the money we need for the trip. GOD IS GOOD!!!!!!!!

Also pray for my two oldest kids. They will fly from The Czech Republic to San Diego to meet up with their youth group going to Mexico to build two homes for families. Pray for strength  for Cory (19) and Leslie (16)!.
