I Like to Move It, Move It Using Movement to Increase Student Engagement
"When the bum is numb, the brain is the same." Student engagement and motivation are dramatically increased when movement is coupled with learning. But how do we incorporate physical activities into our instruction without sacrificing instructional time?
Here are two ideas:
- Action Thermometer: Have students stand and move around the room based on categories you have pre-created. In Math, for example, post 4 numbers (solutions) around the room, one on each wall. Then give each student a number problem written on a card, and have each student stand and go to the side of the room that represents his/her card's solution. - Interview: Students stand with partners and use small white boards or clip-boards as portable writing desks. They "interview" each other about recently covered content. Make it more fun by giving each pair a toy microphone. The interviewer holds the microphone while their partner summarizes the content.
