Meet Valtronic Morocco - the Gateway to Europe.....and Africa

In its 30 year history Valtronic has expanded into six countries on four continents. This has allowed us to better serve our customers no matter where they are.

This article will focus on our Subsidiary in Casablanca, Morocco where we established a manufacturing facility in 1989.  They are capable of 'high volumes" in the industrial zone and assembling medical implants in the separate medical zone with its brand new ISO 7 and ISO 8 clean rooms.  The plant itself is in the growing city of Berrechid, just 15 minutes from the airport.

Lead by the calm, assertive leadership of Hamza EL ALAOUI, the hard-working Moroccan staff has produced a broad variety of products in this facility from battery assemblies, steering wheel assemblies to gastric implants.

Our Moroccan plant like our other facilities also benefits from the longevity of employee tenure enabling them to bring their experience from one project to another.   I had the opportunity to interview several of them and a few things stood out for me amongst them.  First they were all educated, everyone I interviewed including the factory workers had a Bachelors Degree. Second, they were all very focused on what they were doing and proud of their work.  Lastly it was wonderful to see how women had worked their way up from assembly jobs to supervisory roles.

We recently held our Management Planning Meetings there and those who had not yet seen the facilities were quite impressed.  As Jim Ohneck, VP Marketing & Sales stated,  "I was impressed with our facility and team in Morocco. I think for anyone looking for an offshore pricing strategy in a controlled, clean environment, Valtronic Morocco offers a great value. Their industrial line can run projects requiring 100,000 pieces per week, even ones requiring hand assembly. For  the more niche medical products, implantable devices can be run in a clean room environment which boasts biometric access thus ensuring protection of the most sensitive projects."

Active Implantable Medical Devices: Winning the Power Struggle

Size, weight and volume matter when developing and manufacturing an electronic implantable device, but power supply issues are paramount.  See where we are today and what the future holds for implant powering.

Winning the Power Struggle

Behind the Scenes

Meet Hamza El Alaoui General Manag

Hamza El Alaoui

of our Moroccan Subsidiary. Hamza joined Valtronic in 2003 and has been an important part of its success.

What is the most important part of your job?

  • Taking care of our customers by achieving the following:
    • Production schedule timeliness
    • Quality results
    • Customer satisfaction
  • Managing VTMA team by :
    • Ensure the motivation of the whole team
    • Support team members as needed
    • Doing everything necessary to have the full commitment of the team
  • Monitor Finances and do what is necessary to control costs

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Providing satisfaction to our customers, our employees and all our partners.

What is a typical day like for you?

  • Prioritizing the day
  • Attending to e-mails
  • Touring the production lines and having discussions with production people, quality people
  • Analyze the results: turnover, productivity, quality and see where must I need more information to understand the issues
  • Conference call with customers to address their projects

What is your background and how did you enter this field?

My background is in electronics and quality. I would summarize it as follows:

  • Degree in Physics, with a focus on Electronics.
  • ST Microelectronics : Responsible quality process (Triacs Line : 400 operators) for five years
  • Protex Maroc (Glass for automotive industry) : Quality Manager for three years
  • Fiat Auto Maroc : Supplier Quality manager for three years
  • Valtronic Maroc : since 2003 began as Quality Manager

Valtronic fit exactly my expectations. Since the first day in VTMA I' had the conviction that we can build a big and a modern factory here. Today we just that.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in your career?

''If it's not perfect we can improve it''

In your words what should people know about doing business in Morocco?

Doing business in Morocco is simply doing a business like in Europe, USA and Asia. Morocco is the centre of the world: Only 10Km far from Europe, gate for Africa and not far from USA, Canada.

The culture here is an interesting mix from Arabic, European and African cultures.

Lastly, what do you look forward to doing that is not work related?

Serving the needy children and families around the world. To bring them joy, pleasure and safety.

Valtronic also welcomes:

Valtronic Plays Major Role in Bringing Vylife to Life

The Vylife Boussignac respirator is a non-invasive ventilator adapted to emergency use inside and outside hospitals. The

highlights of this

Vylife

product are an ergonomic shape, ease of use and light weight - in at just 435 grams.

To achieve this there were principal design and engineering challenges that Valtronic addressed:

Challenges from a Design Perspective:

  • Extremely robust design suitable for harsh emergency environment deep understanding of the use environment to meet ergonomic needs.
  • Light and handheld device usable in one hand

Challenges from an Engineering Perspective:

  • Low Energy and advanced power management Integration of smallest proprietary valve for accurate oxygen delivery
  • Innovative and proprietary "all-in-one" pneumatic connection

Valtronic's DFM experience and advanced manufacturing capabilities helped realize a design that addressed the above challenges and one that was feasible for scalability from the onset, allowing for high volume production while reducing the number of parts to a minimum.

This was accomplished in two ways; 1) using our miniaturization expertise we were able to address the engineering and design challenges while integrating as many electronics on one PCB as possible - including the display and keyboard. 2) the mechanical parts, were designed around extruded aluminum housing with minimal surrounding components which also reduced the assembly time.

Valtronic also manages the entire supply and provides a fully tested and certified product, ready for distribution. The customer receives a product that addresses their emergency needs.

In emergency situations time is a crucial factor, and the first aid teams have to focus on the patient while relying on robust equipment. VyLife  is a combination of engineered electronic technology with the integration of a smart and robust mechanical design. This winning combination allows the VyLife device to be ready to operate within seconds. With only one mechanical connector to attach the oxygen bottle the mask and the sensors, and one start button, the device is ready to monitor a patient's breathing  continuously  and deliver the oxygen needed in a safe way.

Partners

Scalae and Valtonic have been working together since 2005 on an automotive application. During the first project a close cooperation of solving technical challenges grew in to an understanding that the two companies working together can offer the Swedish market a winning combination of expertise from development to high volume manufacturing.

Scalae offers complete product development based on its trademarked concept of Market-Oriented Technology Development™ - from the idea to a profitable product. They are southern Sweden's most complete product development company, offering a full range of services in product development and limited quantity production.

They combine technology knowledge, management and design, all whilst focusing on the end user's needs, resulting in effective and innovative product development.  Projects are worked on by both industrial designers and builders from start to finish, ensuring cost effective solutions and better end results.

Scalae main markets are med-tech, high end Industrial and companies with a need for plastics expertise. Scalae and Valtronic have combined their expertise both from a technology and industrial design perspective to develop innovative designs for new projects ranging from an implantable gastric band to an automotive sensor for truck brakes.

Scalae and Valtronic complement each other in several areas. Both companies focus on projects which are generally more complex in nature and demand experience in multiple disciplines; electronics, mechanics and software development.   Scalae focuses more on product development and limited production whereas Valtronic's focus includes industrialization and complete manufacturing capabilities reaching higher commercial volumes.

Complimentary services and proven experience for their customers in the medical device and hi tech industrial markets offer customers quality solutions in a seamless manner. Each partner knows their market and strengths and strives to lead in their field.

As our partnership progresses we anticipate an even closer cooperation to enter the Swedish market on microelectronic and micro-mechanical design, this area are rather unknown in Scandinavia. Hopefully you will also see more of Scalae's industrial design for product throughout Europe.
