PTO Co-Presidents' Lettertop

A Gift for Burr Logo It's October at Burr! We look forward to the crisp air, the beautiful foliage and of course Halloween Family Fun Night! October is also the launch of our single major fundraiser of the year - A Gift for Burr.  With the Gift for Burr 100% of your donation goes straight to the benefit of our children. And remember the earlier you contribute, the more chances you have to win.

Get the full details.

We have a financial goal to raise $35,000.00 but equally important is 100% family participation. You should have received the familiar Red envelope with everything you need to know about the campaign including information about the great programs that you'll be helping to support . Please help to make this year's event the most successful ever! And remember to check for corporate matching!

International Walk Bike to School Day Logo

Thanks to everyone who participated in the "Walk / Bike to School  day". The flags around the tree were quite spectacular - and some were very creative - mixing multiple flags together as one.

Halloween Family Fun Night (HFFN) is one of the most well attended community building events at Burr. Please consider donating a bit of time to help with this beloved Burr event. Contact Stephanie Mamis if you are able to help.

It was wonderful to see so many parents at the first PTO Meeting - and we wanted to especially welcome the new families. If you couldn't Budget Pie chart make it, you can find the  Budget Presentation on the  PTO Web Site.  The budget was unanimously approved! In the budget we committed to providing over $40,000.00 in support to Burr. The vast majority of the funds will go toward Academic Support, Technology and Classroom Support. Sincere thanks for hard work of our Treasurer Rachael McCarthy for her presentation of the 2012-2013 budget.

The PTO would like to extend a very big thank you to Mindy Johal and the entire school staff for an informative and fun Curriculum Night. Your dedication to our kids could be heard, seen, and felt throughout the evening.

We are so lucky to have you teaching our children.

4th grade class - both had 92% participation!  A new addition International Walk Bike to School Day Logothis year was our International Flag Garden, with many students making and planting flags representing their family's heritage.  Thanks to everyone who made this day possible, and remember - every day is a great day to walk (and bike or scoot) to school!

BOOYA
is starting up again.

(
Burr Organization of Youth Action)

Mr. Gaita talked to the 5th grade classes about BOOYA and how they can be a part of this community service group.  In the past, BOOYA helped raise money for families in Japan, picked up litter every Monday, sang songs at a local nursing home, collected toys and pajamas for families in need, ran a bake sale to benefit the Auburndale Library, and started a snow shoveing club.  The 5th grade AMBASSADORS are so important to BOOYA, as well as family volunteers.

If you are interested in being a part of BOOYA

please email Mr. Gaita

It would be great if we had 2-3 parents who would be able to help facilitate this group with Mr. Gaita.   Our next meeting will be in Mr. Gaita's room on  Thursday, October 11th at 7:45 for adults and 8:00am for 5th grade AMBASSADORS. We hope to have another successful year.

GO BOOYA!!!

GUYS READ Book Group Is Back!

Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers

On Thursday, November 1 the GUYS READ book group will meet to discuss their first book.  Boys from all grades can come to the meeting with a grown-up.  We welcome fathers, brothers, uncles, and grandfathers.

At the meeting the guys will discuss a book, eat some snacks, and maybe even win some fun treasures.

The first book will be

the newest Captain Underpants book called:

This funny book brings readers back in time to the carefree days of kindergarten, when the worst thing George and Harold had to face was NOT evil mad scientists or alien cafeteria ladies but a kid named Kipper Krupp.

If you are interested in attending please meet in Mr. Gaita's room at 6:00pm ready to discuss the whole book.  For families who would like to read the book but need some support, Mrs. Johal has offered to help out.  Please email Mr. Gaita to ask for a book.

Amazon has the book available for $9.99.

We hope to see you there guys!

Community News

Are We a Match?

NCSC CAP Safe Strong Free  We are looking for community members who are interested in becoming trained prevention specialists. CAP volunteers need no previous experience and include parents of pre-school and school-aged children, empty nesters, professionals and retirees who are interested in child safety.

Each year Newton CAP volunteers present approximately 120 workshops to students in kindergarten, second and fifth grade classrooms. Working in teams of 3, volunteers teach children that they have the right to be Safe, Strong and Free with their friends and peers, when they meet adult strangers, and with those who are trusted to take care of them. Using simple and age-appropriate language, volunteer leaders address bullying, stranger safety, and sexual assault by known persons with the students.

We are looking for people who can make a one school year commitment [October-May] and are available to NCSC Logo contribute 4-6 hours per month during the school day.  Please join us. The next training session is scheduled to begin October 17, 2012.
