Burr News

From Ms. Johal's Desk

Mindy Johal Dear Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you on Curriculum Night. It is an important evening when teachers begin to develop partnerships with parents and set the stage for a successful year ahead. The goal of the evening is to give you an overview of the curriculum and to prepare you to support your child throughout the year.

I hope the information you received was clear and helpful, and that you can see the close connections between our school goals and the teachers' curriculum and instructional plans for the students. This year we will continue our work to align the ELA and math curriculum to the Common Core State Standards and to make a transition to a new educator evaluation system. Our School Improvement Plan, which outlines our goals, is posted on the Burr School Website for your information.

Some of you met your child's classroom teacher for the first time on Curriculum Night and I realize that there is not enough time for the teachers to connect in a meaningful way with everyone. Many of our teachers attend the Back to School Picnic, but still feel they would like a little more time to get to know families. To that end, we are considering having an Open House event before school opens next year when families can drop by to visit their new classrooms and meet the teachers. We are always looking for ways to make things even better. If you have any suggestions to improve the opening weeks of school, please share them with me, our PTO Co-Presidents, Jason Wong and Ted Vahey, or with any of our School Council members. The 2012-13 School Council members are:

Marni Caputo - parent (grade 3 & K)

Jaye Schneider - parent (grade 4 & 2)

Sarah Sian - parent (grade 2 & 1)

Lisa Holahan - parent (grade 4, 2, & K)

Lynn Slobodin - community member

Lynette Lawton - grade 3 teacher

Julie Canning - grade 3 teacher

Trevor Glode - grade 4 teacher

Mindy Johal - principal

Our first School Council meeting this year will be on October 10th at 4:30 PM. These meetings are open and anyone can attend. During our first meeting we will be setting the meeting dates for the rest of the school year and we will post them on the Burr calendar for your information.

Now that students have made their initial adjustment into the new school year, I am asking that parents of students in grades 1-5 say goodbye to their children in the morning either at the outside door, or at the first double door by the kindergarten classes. This has been a successful past practice at Burr. Helping students follow morning routines independently is one of our goals, so letting your child enter the classroom with peers and practicing these skills is important. The early morning is an important time for teachers to welcome all the students and get them off to a good start for the day. This is not possible when parents are stopping by to check in or want to have a conversation about their child. Communication is important, so I encourage you to send in a note with your child or email the teacher and he/she can call you at a convenient time. Please also remember that children should not come into the building until 8:20 AM. A supervised Early Morning Program which begins at 7:30 AM is available for your convenience. The program is staffed by two Burr staff members, Kaylan Finn and Amelia Elton.

In these opening weeks of school I have had the pleasure of visiting each classroom to discuss our school's Core Values of Academic Excellence, the Effort and Joy of Learning, a Strong Sense of Community, and Individual Growth and Expression. Children shared excellent age appropriate examples of actions that employ each value. I encourage you to have a conversation with your child to see what he/she understands about our Core Values and the ways that they can work toward these in school. I am sure your personal family values will be mirrored in what we expect at school. Our collective reinforcement and support will demonstrate to the children that these are important principles for us all to uphold.

Our work at school is enhanced ten-fold with your support and a strong home/school partnership makes anything possible.

Sincerely,

Mindy

International Walk and Bike to School Day this Wednesday!

International Walk Bike to School Day LogoBurr will once again join with all the Newton elementary schools - and thousands of children around the world - to participate in International Walk to School Day this Wednesday.  International Walk to School Day is a global event where communities from over 40 countries walk and bike to school on a single day.  Make plans to leave the car at home and walk or bike with friends and neighbors!  If you can't walk with your kids, arrange for them to walk with a friend.  Taking the bus also reduces the number of cars on the road, so kids riding the bus are participating too!

Please make every effort to participate on Wednesday.  The goal of this event is to show how much healthier and more fun it is to walk to school, and how much safer our school zone is without all the cars!  The hope is that after participating, families will continue to walk whenever possible. This event is sponsored by Safe Routes to School/MassRIDES, which provides the great handouts we'll have for all the walkers, bikers, and bus riders on Wednesday morning!

Do you have any questions?  Want a cool "Walk to School Day" sign for your group to carry?  Email us: BurrSafeRoutes@burrpto.org

Burr Garden Cleanup--Friday, Oct 12th, 3-5pm...And Summer Garden Club Thanks!

It has been an interesting year for the Burr Gardens with the infestation of wasps (now gone).  However, the 3 sisters prevailed and were amazing this year.  Many a bean was sampled and enjoyed from the 3rd grade beds!  The squash, pumpkins and watermelons did well, too.  One of the pumpkins will make it's appearance at school around Halloween.  The eggplant and tomato plants were prolific producers.  With Fall officially upon us, though, we now focus our efforts on putting our garden to rest for the season and preparing for the spring, which will come so quickly indeed!

The Burr Garden Club Families invite you to grab a rake and join us for some grounds work at the Burr School after school on Friday October 12th.  This is a festive fall tradition and a great community-building time for our families.  Many hands make for light work on our school grounds--please join us if you can!  Invite your students to join us or let them play on the playground while we cleanup and prepare the garden beds for the winter.

Things to bring:

rakes, gloves, and yard waste bags, snacks, warm beverages in thermoses

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the following folks for tending to our garden for the entire growing season: Tricia Bombara, Stephanie Manis, Mei Zhang, Iqbal Kurker, Dan Finkelstein, The Della Cortes, Kelly Brown, Joan Schulz, Marni Caputo, and Rose Dieffenbach.  We apologize if we missed any Garden helpers; we truly need and want all the community help we can, and appreciate all of your efforts!  We must also extend a most hearty thanks to our resident Burr classroom gardener extraordinaires, Marlene Gibson, Megan Ulland, Dana Hanson, and Jessica Avery, who were instrumental in design and upkeep of our classroom garden this season.  We're planning more garden fun for 2013 - so keep an eye on the bulletin.  Come spring, we'll invite your help again to make the garden a fun-fulled success for all ages!

Go Gardening!

Questions?  Please contact Megan Ulland (megan.ulland@gmail.com) or Marlene Gibson (bebopbabee@aol.com)

P.S.  Come spring, we'd love any donations of garden items you no longer want especially tomato cages or trellises or rodent/rabbit fencing.  Let Megan or Marlene know if you have that in your garden shed or garage and want to be rid of it!

Thank you to our Room Parent Volunteers!!

Many thanks to all the parents who have stepped up to be Room Parents for the 2012-2013 school year!

This book is a lighthearted backyard mystery that gracefully captures the seasonal spirit of the joyous Jewish celebration of Sukkot, reflecting its appreciation of the natural world. This story is also about gratitude and discovering that sometimes you get just what you want when you least expect it. The Vanishing Gourds will capture the imagination of children of all backgrounds from preschoolers to early elementary school students.
