Burr News

From Ms. Johal's Desk

Mindy Johal

Dear Families,

What a fabulous turnout for the May Fair yesterday! It was such glorious day to spend outdoors and a great way to kick off the end-of-year season. Thank you to all of you who volunteered to staff the booths, cook the food, supervise the games, and bring your families out for the afternoon. It was certainly an "all hands on deck" kind of event.  It is the involvement and hard work of many Burr families that makes these community events at Burr so successful. I would especially like to thank Valarie Wastcoat, Maren Oslund, Jenny Heinstein, Kelly Brown, and Sloane Goldhagen who have been working for months to plan and organize the May Fair.

Baby News! First grade teacher, Natalia Espinal, is pregnant and expecting her third child. Congratulations to Natalia and her family. The baby is due in late October and Natalia will be on maternity leave from late October until after February vacation. Careful consideration will be given to hiring a skilled substitute to take over during her absence and we will be sure to plan a smooth transition.

Staffing for Next Year

I am happy to report that all of this year's classroom teachers will be returning to Burr next year.

Kindergarten:       Ms. Fitch, Ms Frail, Ms. Mc Mahon

First Grade:         Ms. Espinal, Mr. Gaita, Ms. Golden

Second Grade:     Ms. Creedan, Ms. Field, Ms. Roberts

Third Grade:        Ms. Canning, Ms. Crowley, Ms. Lawton

Fourth Grade:      Mr. Glode, Ms. Robinson, Ms. Taylor

Fifth Grade:        Ms. Cooley*, Mr. McMahon, Ms. Moran

*We are excited about having one co-taught classroom in fifth grade. A co-taught classroom is one with a general education and special education teacher team teaching. Next year's fifth grade parents have been given information on this model and I will continue to keep them informed as we move forward.

Third grade teacher, Ms. Silva, has been granted another year of leave. She will be spending another year at home with her son, Hudson. I am pleased to announce that Katie Crowley will be staying on at Burr. She has done a great job in third grade this year.

We have several changes in our mental health staffing for next year. These changes were necessary due to an increase in time allocations and our efforts to ensure that each elementary school has no more that two mental health staff members. Next year, Burr will have an additional day of mental health coverage. I wish our current staff a fond farewell and thank them for their excellent work at Burr. Psychologists, Julie Gold and Ivonne Borreo, will be at Williams and Cabot respectively, and social worker, Mary Gartland, will be at Horace Mann and Underwood.

Next year at Burr we will welcome Dr. Betsy Juarez (psychologist) and Susan Kass (social worker) as our mental health team. Betsy has just completed a school psychology internship at Cabot and Countryside and is excited about staying in Newton. Betsy has experience working at the elementary and middle school levels, as well as in hospital and clinic settings. She is skilled in providing a wide array of assessments and supporting a diverse population of students and families. Susan has worked with Newton Public Schools for 15 years. She has worked at the high school level and at the elementary school level. Most recently, Susan has been responsible for delivering social thinking curriculum, Kid Connections, to students in five of our elementary schools. Next year her time will be evenly split between the Burr and Mason Rice. I feel confident that both women bring skills and talents that are a great match for Burr.

Student Class Placement

The teachers and I have started working on class placements for next year.  The process of placing students is a long and complex one. The time and effort we spend weighing all of the factors reflect the importance we place on creating an optimal learning environment for each student. We have received input from some parents which we will consider during this process. I thank you all for respecting the staff's professional judgment about the best possible learning environment for your child next year. Once balanced classes have been created, I will assign a teacher to each group.  All the teachers at Burr are highly qualified to educate and support all students, both socially and academically. The class lists are in draft form until late August because enrollment fluctuates throughout the summer and one student moving in or out of district can drastically affect the make up of a group.

We will let you know of your child's placement in late August. Class placements, once they are sent out to everyone, are final. Changes cannot be made since they seriously compromise the balance that we work so hard to achieve. The class lists will be emailed, unless you request that we mail a paper copy to you. Consequently, it is important for us to have your most current email address. Today, we will send out an email message to the primary contact address currently listed in our records. This will be the email address that we will use to send out class placements in August. If you do not receive the email, or want placement information sent to a different address, please let us know by emailing the correct address to Sue_Fernando@newton.k12.ma.us.

I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming end-of-year events. A few key events are:

  • The last PTO meeting of the year - Tuesday, May 22nd at 6:30 PM (School Committee members will be in attendance)
  • Spring Concert -  May 23 at 7:00 PM (Burr Cafetorium)
  • Color Day - June 5 (rain date June 6)

Be sure to check the Burr website and classroom newsletters for other events and activities. Much goes on during the next few weeks to celebrate the work the students have done all year.

Sincerely,

Mindy  Johal

Please feel free to submit any questions in advance to pto-board@burrpto.org.  There will be a short presentation and handouts that outline budget and enrollment trends as well as answers to frequently asked questions.

Come and ask questions of the Committee. There is sure to be discussion regarding the new "buffer zones" and the Newton School's Foundation proposed Naming Rights.

Join the Burr School Council

Dear Burr School parents and parents of incoming Kindergarteners,

The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 mandated the establishment of a School Council at each public school in Massachusetts. This group advises and assists the Principal in such matters as the school budget, the school improvement plan, the identification of educational needs of the student body, and the adoption of educational goals. At Burr this group consists of four parent representatives, four teachers, community members, and the Principal.  The Council meets roughly once a month.  All Council meetings are open to the Burr community.

This spring, we will elect two parent representatives to the Burr School Council for a 2-year term spanning the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years. In order to be eligible, the parents must have a child at Burr for the entire time they will serve on the council.

Please think about this opportunity to be involved in your child's school. You will serve an important advisory function while getting to know the teachers on the Council and Principal Johal. Consider running yourself, or nominating another parent.  (In the past, candidates have usually nominated themselves; don't hesitate to express your interest!)

If you would like to run for one of the open School Council positions, please write a brief statement (125 words or less) about yourself and why you'd like to serve on the school council.  Please submit the statement either by mail to the school office (171 Pine Street, Auburndale, MA 02466), via your child's backpack (write "School Council" on the envelope), or via email to the PTO Communications Coordinator, by Friday, June 1.

If more candidates than we require step forward, an election will be conducted during the week of June 4.  If only three candidates steps forward, those candidates will be granted the parent representative positions and will be announced the same week.

If you have questions about the School Council and/or would like to know more about serving as a parent representative, feel free to contact any of the current parent representatives, below, or Ms. Johal, Burr School Principal (617-559-9360).

Current Burr School Council parent representatives:

Newton West Little League Needs Your Support!

Tonight, Monday, May 21, the Newton Parks & Recreation Commission will hold a public hearing to discuss and hopefully vote in favor of our plans to put a concession stand at Lyons Field.

Besides a concession stand that meets Health Departments guidelines, our plan includes options for a handicap accessible path, an ADA compliant bathroom and storage.  We also have plans to install a defibrillator on the premises.

We believe that these changes will greatly enhance the safety, convenience and beautification of Lyons Field.

The meeting takes place at 7pm - Newton City Hall, Room 209

Please show your support by attending this meeting.

Thanks,

Think Summer with Newton Community Education

Summer Kids & Teens programs with Newton Community Education are filling fast! But we still have openings in lots of our week-long programs for elementary and middle school kids.

Elementary schoolers and younger kids can get artsy in our Lions & Tigers & Bears class, get dramatic in Young Broadway, get into science in any of our Wicked Cool science and engineering programs, or get sweaty in our Soccer & Sports or Flag Football camps. These are just some of our many still-available options.

We've also added new programs the last two weeks of August, including Wicked Phab Physics Lab, Wicked Wacky Lab Week, and Create a TV Show.

Middle schoolers have lots of opportunities to get technical with us this summer: try our new Adventures in IT, Picture Projects, or Music Masterpieces with Garageband classes, for example.

High schoolers can get a leg up on the college application process with our summer SAT prep classes or college essay writing class. And of course we have several sessions of Driver's Ed this summer at both high schools.

We have summer offerings for adults too, and kids ages 16 and up are always welcome in our adult classes.

For more information or to register, call NCE at 617-559-6999 or visit our website at www.newtoncommunityed.org, where you'll find our Summer-at-a-Glance chart to help you plan something new and exciting each week.
Help Wanted at Newton Community Education

At Newton Community Education we would like to expand our Kids & Teens program. To do that we need some help.

We are looking for an elementary school parent available to work part-time (maybe as few as five hours a week or so) to help plan our Fall program. You would be involved in brainstorming ideas for new programs and recruiting teachers to work for NCE. The ideal candidate for this position is an elementary school parent who has been involved in the PTO and has some awareness of other Kids program offerings around Newton.

If you're interested, please email a cover letter and resume to: lisa_rucinski@newton.k12.ma.us
