BOOYA Spare Change Drive for Otter
| |
BOOYA is sponsoring a spare change drive this week. Kaylee Federmann and other BOOYA AMBASSADORS have organized this event to raise money to help otters at the Clearwater Marina in Florida. Kaylee got the idea from the movie "Dolphin Tale". She has already helped sponsor Winter the dolphin at the facility. AMBASSADORS have met with Mr. Gaita to organize this event, going into classrooms and making posters to display throughout the school. If they raise $150 they will be able to adopt an otter. You can help BOOYA by encouraging your child to bring in some spare change. The donation jugs are outside the library and in the lobby. They will be collecting money all week. GO BOOYA!

May Fair - Saturday May 19, 12-3 p.m.
| |
May Fair is finally here! With the cold May we have had so far, we can all use a fun-filled day with the Burr Community. For those of you who are new to Burr, May Fair is an annual family event filled with games, bounce houses, crafts, cake walk, raffles and more. This year, we are excited to announce that the cake decorating theme will be Storybooks. Start planning your cake design now!
May Fair requires all hands on deck. Within the next week, you will be receiving an email from your room parent asking that you sign up for a 30-minute time slot to help with an activity. We are also looking for general volunteers. All volunteers earn free tickets for their families.
Questions or want to volunteer? Please email Valerie Wastcoat at valerie@valeriewastcoat.com or Maren Olsund at marenoslund@gmail.com.
We hope to see you all there!

Time for the Burr Garden Classroom
| |
Springtime at Burr...'tis the season for our beloved Burr Garden Classroom. If you enjoy gardening (or have always wanted to learn more about it!), we invite you to join us for some good old fashioned fun in the dirt n' sun. Over the upcoming weeks, every class at Burr will visit the classroom and plant a garden with a different "theme". We're always looking for parents to assist in their kids' classes as they plant their gardens (especially in the younger grades--lots of little green thumbs require many helping hands on deck). Please let Dana Hanson know if you think you might like to join us. Younger siblings are welcome--please come a few moments before your child's class is scheduled.
(If you can't make the planting sessions, but would like to join our Summertime Burr Family Garden Club, we'll be sending out weekly signups for that as school comes to a close--this is a flexible gig and you help out when it's convenient for your schedule--after work, on weekends, whenever...it's a great way to stay connected to Burr after school ends!)

Join the Burr School Council
| |
Dear Burr School parents and parents of incoming Kindergarteners,
The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 mandated the establishment of a School Council at each public school in Massachusetts. This group advises and assists the Principal in such matters as the school budget, the school improvement plan, the identification of educational needs of the student body, and the adoption of educational goals. At Burr this group consists of 4 parent representatives, 4 teachers, community members, and the Principal. The Council meets roughly once a month. All Council meetings are open to the Burr community.
This spring, we will elect two parent representatives to the Burr School Council for a 2-year term spanning the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years. In order to be eligible, the parents must have a child at Burr for the entire time they will serve on the council.
Please think about this opportunity to be involved in your child's school. You will serve an important advisory function while getting to know the teachers on the Council and Principal Johal. Consider running yourself, or nominating another parent. (In the past, candidates have usually nominated themselves; don't hesitate to express your interest!)
If you would like to run for one of the open School Council positions, please write a brief statement (125 words or less) about yourself and why you'd like to serve on the school council. Please submit the statement either by mail to the school office (171 Pine Street, Auburndale, MA 02466), via your child's backpack (write "School Council" on the envelope), or via email to the PTO Communications Coordinator, by Wednesday, June 1.
If more candidates than we require step forward, an election will be conducted during the week of June 6. If only three candidates steps forward, those candidates will be granted the parent representative positions and will be announced the same week.
If you have questions about the School Council and/or would like to know more about serving as a parent representative, feel free to contact any of the current parent representatives, below, or Ms. Johal, Burr School Principal (617-559-9360).
Current Burr School Council parent representatives:
Marni Caputo
Dana Hanson
Stephanie Mamis
Jaye Schneider
Sincerely,
Colette Burke Burr School PTO Communications Coordinator

How Important is a Global Perspective Today?
|
|
As our world becomes more interconnected, what better way to learn about China and have a family on the other side of the world! Share your home, your family traditions, and American culture with a Chinese exchange student or teacher for the 2012-2013 fall school year. Participants all speak English and are eager to learn about American culture and to share their culture with you. Beijing Jingshan exchange students and teachers arrive mid-September and depart mid-January. Students attend regular classes at the high schools and lunches are provided. Participants will travel on Columbus Day weekend, Veteran's Day weekend, Thanksgiving holiday, and winter holiday. We are especially in need of host families for female students for next year. Families do not have to have high school students as families with younger children also make strong connections with the visitors.
For further information, please contact the chairperson of the Newton-Beijing Jingshan School Exchange Program: Donna_Fong@newton.k12.ma.us
