PTO Co-Presidents Letter

Dear Friends,

Spring is certainly here and many exciting activities are happening all over Burr! The Chateau night was a welcome relief to the daily cooking routine, thank you Nancy Caulfield for organizing. A combination of community spring-cleaning and lots of volunteers with 30 minutes to spare produced the annual Burr book swap. This year, hundreds of amazing books were available for our children to choose from, all free thanks to you and the organization of the Book Swap Team! Newton Serves Sunday was sunny and warm with more than 40 volunteers joining together to give Burr a good sprucing-up. The Burr garden classroom received a good weeding and is now ready for planting! Thank you to all the volunteers that helped, and to Bill Hoch and Kelly Brown for coordinating with the city!

The kick-off to teacher and staff appreciation week started last Thursday when they were treated to a wonderful breakfast hosted by you and organized by our fabulous Hospitality crew. This week we encourage you to show your appreciation with cards, notes or drawings, a special flower, a donation to Newton Schools Foundation-Honor thy teacher, or a donation to the Library or Literacy funds (yes, two great ways to donate-literally)!

This Friday, May 11 at 8:45 a.m., we have coffee with Ms. Johal.  She will discuss all the current news happening at Burr. Then on May 19, from 12-3 p.m., bring the whole family out to enjoy the annual May Fair at Burr. Remember this event only happens because of volunteers like you!

Nominations for the new board are this month! We are still looking for PTO board volunteers; please consider joining. The PTO builds community and enhances our kid's education. We wouldn't have things like Halloween Family Fun Night, May Fair, Book Swap, and Creative Arts and Sciences without volunteers like you! It takes a village :-)  Please contact Tracy Carter (tgunrud@hotmail.com) if you want to volunteer or have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week
Mindy JohalTeacher-Staff Appreciation Week is May 7th-May 11th and Burr School's annual tradition returns.

What's this tradition?

Every year during Teacher-Staff Appreciation Week, Burr School students bring in a flower to their teachers, teacher aides, specialists and other staff to show their appreciation. Since we have so many great teachers and staff at our school, each classroom will be assigned names of teachers/staff to remember and to thank with flowers.

Room Parents have sent the classroom flower assignments, so check your emails or backpacks.

No Gift Policy: Newton Schools has a "no gift policy" but other ways to show staff appreciation can include cards and drawings.

You might consider making a donation to the Burr Classroom Literature Fund. This fund supports your child's education by providing books for their classroom. Fund donations are pooled and divided equally among all Burr teachers in the form of gift certificates to the New England Mobile Book Fair, and teachers can purchase books for their classroom. Donations due by
Friday May 11th
. Contact person is Marni Goldstein Caputo at mgolds2@yahoo.com. A form also went home in backpacks or a donation to Honor Thy Teacher through Newton Schools Foundation (www.newtonschoolsfoundation.org)

This Newton-wide organization supports and honor teachers. When you donate to "honor they teacher", teachers are notified of your donation, their name is listed in the Newton TAB, names are shared with superintendent and principals, and the donations go to support teaching and learning in the Newton Schools or buying/dedicating a special Burr School Library book. This is a great way to choose a special book, for a special teacher, which will be kept in the Burr School Library for years.

More information to follow. Contact person is Gretchen Becker at gretchenbecker@verizon.net
May Fair - Saturday May 19, 12-3 p.m.
Mindy JohalMay Fair is finally here! With the cold May we have had so far, we can all use a fun-filled day with the Burr Community. For those of you who are new to Burr, May Fair is an annual family event filled with games, bounce houses, crafts, cake walk, raffles and more.  This year, we are excited to announce that the cake decorating theme will be Storybooks. Start planning your cake design now!

May Fair requires all hands on deck. Within the next week, you will be receiving an email from your room parent asking that you sign up for a 30-minute time slot to help with an activity. We are also looking for general volunteers. All volunteers earn free tickets for their families.

Questions or want to volunteer? Please email Valerie Wastcoat at valerie@valeriewastcoat.com or Maren Olsund at marenoslund@gmail.com.
