 Friends, December 1 is this week! We intend to wrap the campaign up as soon as we meet out goal of $35,000. Don't put it off another day.  An annual Burr School tradition! The cafeteria will be converted to a top-notch bookstore for three days this week. It's a convenient, low stress way to get an early jump on your holiday shopping...and all purchases support the Burr PTO. Book prices are typical for paperbacks and hardcovers, and we have some bargain books in the $3 range, too. SCHOOL DAY BOOK FAIR HOURSTuesday, Wednesday, Friday--

FAMILY BOOK FAIR NIGHT & PTO MEETING Tuesday, November 29th 5:00 - 8:00 pm Parents, children, grandparents, neighbors, and friends are welcome-the more the merrier! Childcare provided while parents shop and take in the PTO meeting at 7 p.m. Our guest speaker will be Newton Free Library NEW Children's Room Supervisor, Jill Graboski. She will discuss children's literacy, particularly technology trends and e-reader tools for children. Don't miss this unique opportunity to have access to one of Newton's experts on children and books!

During the book fair, please be sure to look for classroom teacher "wish list" book selections at the register area. Teachers will identify books they would like to add to their classroom libraries and then families may purchase them. | Creative Arts and Sciences Programming | | |
Lucinda Landon, Author, will be visiting the the 3rd Graders this Friday, November 9th at 9:00 am in the Cafeteria.
 Ms. Landon, like her heroine, Meg Mackintosh loves mysteries. Her enthusiasm is apparent and contagious in her presentations. Ms. Landon presents the art and rules of writing a good mystery, how to create a plot, plant clues, and create a character that is a detective. A power point presentation shows the stages of her books' design and production. Ms. Landon will end with a Meg Macintosh drawing lesson and then take questions from the kids.

Burr 8th Annual Science & Engineering Week · January 9 - 13, 2012

Does your career or hobby involve science, technology, engineering or math? How about the environment or sustainability? Would you be willing to share your excitement about one of these topics with a class of Burr students for 30 minutes?
We're organizing Burr's 8th Annual Science & Engineering Week, which brings parents into the classroom to provide our children with an exciting and accessible view of science and engineering. The kids love these presentations and they're easy and rewarding for the presenter.
We hope you'll participate by giving a 30-minute presentation to one or more class during the week of January 9 - 13. Come by the Burr  School Store on Tuesday morning and check out the hockey stick pencils, polka dot pens, and cell phone erasers. We have lots of great school supplies! The store is open Tuesdays from 8:20-8:35 am. Thanks for supporting the 5th grade fundraising effort!

The Newton Family Singers invite your whole family to our fall concert, "When I was a Child," at 4pm on Sunday, December 11th .This program of folk songs was inspired by common childhood experiences and watching our children grow. "When I was a Child" marks NFS's fourth season singing together. The Newton Family Singers are an intergenerational chorus and band celebrating family, community and American folk music.

Newton's Community Preservation Committee will meet on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00 p.m. in City Hall Room 202. The agenda includes reports on three CPA-funded surveys of Newton's historic resources (archaeology, City archives, and City historic buildings); on the project that led to the new Digital Newton section of the Newton Free Library's website; a discussion of CPA-eligible projects in the City's new Capital Improvements Plan; and evaluation & planning for 10th anniversary events.
