| PTO Co-President's Letter | Dear Burr Parents,
This is the time of year when we often stop and think about what we are thankful for, here are a few things that come to mind. We are thankful for all our community and school has to offer; all the dedicated, hard working, and caring families, teachers and staff. We are thankful for our kids who bless us with wonder and frustration; so often in equal measures. Thank you to YOU, our neighbors and friends, because IT TAKES A VILLAGE to raise our children and keep them safe. The PTO and our children are thankful for all your donations to the Gift for Burr campaign! These contributions allow us to give the gift of a more vibrant and rich educational experience to our children. THANK YOU! As we enter this holiday season, we as a community are thankful for what we have and also remember our responsibility to those around us who are in need. Again this year, the 3rd grade is sponsoring a food drive for the Newton Food Pantry. Donations can be brought to school and will be collected from November 17th -December 9th. Also, thank you to Jeff Zabel for helping us share our copious amount of Halloween treats with those less fortunate at the Pine Street Inn. Speaking of treats, the PTO Election Day Bake Sale was a wonderful success. Thank you to Erika Drezner for her well-orchestrated organization of this event. If we had an accounting of all of the contributors, we would thank them individually! Thank you to everyone who brought food and drink to benefit the PTO, and to all who purchased items from the sale!
Coming next week is the Book Fair, which provides an opportunity to buy terrific children's (and grown-ups') books while supporting Burr. Get a jump on your holiday shopping; books make great gifts for friends, families and teachers! Parents will have a chance to join their kids when their classroom visits the Book Fair or come in and browse before drop-off, and/or shop before and after the PTO meeting on Tuesday, November 29th at 7 pm. In conjunction with the Book Fair at the PTO meeting, we will have a special evening presentation featuring Newton Free Library's NEW Children's Room Supervisor, Jill Graboski. Please join us, along with your children, for this special event - we'll have sitters available during Ms. Graboski's presentation. Thank you to the Book Fair team, Nancy Caulfield, Sarah Sian, and Dana Hanson for their hard work arranging the Book Fair this year! Also, thank you to Jody Klein for organizing the RHD book club meeting on NurtureShock. This was a wonderful read, and we look forward to the next suggested book, maybe we will find it at the book fair! Once again, we remind you that your Gift for Burr can be sent to school in your child's folder, or you may use the PayPal link on our website, www.burrpto.org. Please mark the envelope "Gift for Burr." Every contribution is greatly appreciated; please give what you can.
We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving! We are truly grateful for being a part of such a diligent, generous, and thoughtful community :-)

| National Diabetes Awareness Month | | |
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Through the combined efforts of the Jordan Bennett Weiss Fund and the City of Newton Health Department, we are committed to the well-being of our students and children by educating the community about the warning signs of diabetes.
Knowledge of the warning signs is our greatest weapon against this disease. Sometimes the symptoms may be obvious and sometimes they are not. Symptoms which might appear to be unrelated, when viewed in the context of the list of warning signs, may suggest intervention. We hope that you will familiarize yourself with the warning signs/symptoms of diabetes. |
| Inclusive Schools Week Special Evening Presentation | | |
Screening of Including Samuel Followed by Panel Discussion with Williams School Educators
December 7, 7-8:30 p.m. Williams Elementary School Auditorium
Dan Habib's award-winning documentary film, Including Samuel, chronicles the Habib family's efforts to include Samuel, diagnosed with cerebral palsy, in every facet of their lives. The film honestly portrays his family's hopes and struggles as well as the experiences of four other individuals with disabilities and their families. Including Samuel is a highly personal, passionately photographed film that captures the cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion.
The presentation is open to the public.
Sponsored by the Williams Elementary School Special Education PAC Gail Sokoloff, Beth Doran and Vivian Glassman-Grosser

Support the Newton Public Schools
Give to the Newton Schools Foundation | | | This holiday season, support the Newton Schools by giving to the Newton Schools Foundation (NSF). The NSF is the private fundraising organization that has provided more than 500 grants totaling over $2.5 million to Newton Public School teachers and administrators, and most recently supported the installation of 21st century classroom technology in 42 fifth grade classrooms throughout the city. Our Foundation is growing. We're reaching out to the community - businesses, institutions and individuals - to provide our public schools with the teaching and learning tools that will enable Newton's students to succeed in a challenging and complex world. Please help us help us achieve this goal. Complete and submit the form that came home in your child's backpack or donate online. |
