| PTO Co-President's Letter | |
Thank you Burr Families for another amazing school year! Thank you for your generosity, energy and creativity. There are so many people that help out; we thought it would be easier to list those of you who don't:
Well, that's the long list :-)
The family picnics, Parent/Principal Coffees, Teacher Breakfasts and Luncheons, Picture Days, Blue Zone and Walk to School Days, Halloween Family Fun Night, Book Fairs, PTO meetings, Science and Engineering Week, Ice Skating Events, International Potluck Dinners, Book Swaps, Art Shows, Garden Classroom, Parent's Nights Out, May Fair, Color Day, Respect for Human Differences, Understanding our Differences, Creative Arts and Sciences, Green Team, Special Ed. PAC, Burr Buddies, Newton Serves, Library Helpers, Burr Bulletin, Website and Communication Helpers, and Room Parents-ALL this would not be possible with out your help, and it leads to the vibrant community that is Burr.
We started the year with a new Principal, and the transition was seamless. Ms. Johal has done an amazing job and we couldn't be more pleased that she has joined our Burr Family. We look forward to the addition of Katie Crowley and Jeff McMahon to our Burr community next year.
I would also like to extend a BIG WELCOME to our new board members: Ted Vahey as our new Co-President, Jessica Avery as our Fundraising Coordinator, Rachael McCarthy as our Treasurer, and Kim Susko, representing our incoming Kindergartners, as our Secretary.
This is also the time of year where we must say "until we meet again" to some of our Burr family as you move on to your Next Great Life Adventure:
- To all the 5th graders and their families, we wish you well in Middle School. Please come back to visit! We'd love to see you!
- We wish Ms. Cohen and other departing Burr Staff bon voyage; we hope to see you again soon! We are so excited for Ms. Silva and wish her well on her maternity leave--we will look forward to meeting her bundle of joy!
- We would like to say thank you to Steve DeJesus, Nancy Caulfield, Weiqun Shi, and Diana Fisher-Gomberg for their time and dedication to the Burr PTO board for the past two years. No worries, this is not good-bye, we will keep you all on speed-dial :-)
It is with a heavy heart that we must say good-bye to one of our Burr Family members, Lynne Urquiola. Lynne worked for the Burr Bulletin as one of the editors for many years, and worked with many of our young kids at ACNS. Thank you for your contribution to our community, Lynne. Your memory will always be in our hearts and this great Burr Family will always be there for yours. Peace.
We wish you all a safe and relaxing summer, and look forward to seeing your all again on September 6th!
Steve DeJesus, Tracy Carter, and now Ted Vahey Your Burr PTO Co-Presidents

Ideas from the Book Room to Avoid the 'Summer Brain Drain'! | | |
Summer Brain Drain, also known as Summer Slide, is real! Students in the early grades often lose reading skills over the summer if they don't continue to read. Here is a list of sites which will help you prevent Summer Brain Drain for your child. They have ideas for how to do this in a fun way. Please don't forget to read aloud to your children - it is just as important as having children read on their own. Books on tape/CD that are available from the library are great for those long car rides. Great literature read by a professional actor can keep kids and adults mesmerized. Check out these sites - and have a great summer!
The Auburndale Community Library is a wonderful resource open to all and within walking distance for Burr families. This summer they will have forms for the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading program. By reading eight books and keeping a reading journal/log, having a parent/guardian sign off, students will be eligible to choose a free book from any Barnes & Noble! Please stop by the air-conditioned Auburndale Community Library to stay cool this summer and to be cool by reading wonderful books!

The Newton Free Library has a summer reading program for which children can sign up. It makes students feels like they are part of a community of readers. Kids keep a log and get a little prize at the end. There are also reading lists available on line:

The Massachusetts Teachers Association has teamed up with the Red Sox to encourage students to read this summer. Students can enter a lottery with their completed reading log to win prizes including tickets to a Red Sox game.

PBS has a site with many great links for kids. Here is the link for Between the Lions with games, stories and video links about books and reading. The animated books add an extra dimension to the reading experience - I loved Ruby Sings the Blues.

The Kids Reads site has great book reviews and recommendations for children's books.

One of my favorite sites is Reading Rockets. It is a good resource for parents, has ideas to help young readers, lists of books and authors, videos and podcasts of children's book authors.

Keep cool, have fun and don't forget to use sunscreen!

| Burr School Directory updates go Electronic | | |
In the last year, have you...
- Moved?
- Gotten a new email address?
- Changed phone numbers?
If so, we need your updated information for next year's Burr School Directory. This year we are going completely electronic, so rather than send you a form via your child's backpack, please click on the link to the Burr PTO website directory form:
http://www.burrpto.org/BurrPTODirForm.html and either....
check NO CHANGES
check PLEASE CONTACT ME AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER
or, enter your modifications and hit SUBMIT.
For parents of 5th graders, please ignore this email unless you have a younger sibling at Burr. Otherwise for families leaving Burr school, please send me an email so I can remove your family from the database.
We strive to get contact from each and every family (even if there are no changes), and so a simple email to me will do as well if you prefer. Thanks for your support in helping to make our school directory as accurate as possible!
Thanks,
